Heading down a scary and dangerous road Samantha faced many of the same problems most of us with weight loss goals do when we're trying to lose weight we've put on over many years. Working as a childcare assistant and a part-time make-up artist for theatre actors in addition to her busy home life made it difficult to always eat well and have enough energy left to exercise regularly. As Samantha tells it, "I had been feeling unhappy about my body (both inside and out) for at least five years." Despite her body crying out for help, for all these years Samantha lacked the drive to help herself. Finally, the onset of health problems such as irritable bowel and gallstones made her realise that she was heading down a scary and dangerous road and forced her to take action. Overcoming the hardest part Because of her health problems, making the decision to lose weight was not hard for Samantha; the hard part was finding a weight loss program that would suit her body and her lifestyle. On the advice of her Naturopath (Kim Robinson), who was helping her overcome the health problems, Samantha started on the Ultra Lite weight loss program and according to her, "has never looked back since." Pre-packaged meals haven't worked well for Samantha in the past because she tends to rely on them far too heavily. "I get complacent eating pre-packaged meals and I don't think it's healthy eating them all the time." Detoxing her body During the first week of her Ultra Lite program, Samantha's body responded normally to the detoxing effect it has. "My body was detoxing the first week of the program, and I suffered a little bit of nausea and headaches, but these disappeared within a few days. After my body got "cleaner" I started getting huge bursts of energy." And Samantha put her new energy to good use. "With all this new energy I started to exercise and began getting more out of the time I spent at work with the children. I had much more stamina around the house and at work, so I was also able to work longer hours in the theatre if I wanted to." The new Samantha emerges As Samantha's body began to change, her confidence began to grow and she couldn't believe how great she began to feel. "My health problems started to go and I began feeling like a completely different person." This shouldn't have come as a surprise because Samantha was literally becoming a new person. In around 5 months Samantha's dress size went from an 18-20 down to a size 12. For Samantha, the weight she lost wasn't difficult to achieve because she found a program that was right for her. In the end her total weight loss was around 50 kilograms or over 110 lbs. The maintenance phase After reaching her ideal weight, Samantha simply switched over to a maintenance program. "I found it easy to go on to the maintenance program, and although this meant I could start eating more of some foods (sometimes as much as double), I often felt that the new amounts I could eat were a little too much." Today Samantha occasionally eats take aways and other foods that are relatively high in fat but these are considered her 'once a week foods'. "I learnt to be honest with myself and eating treats now and then has become part of my normal eating." With her old eating habits a thing of the past, Samantha now prefers to stick to those foods recommended by Ultra Lite for at least five days a week. Lessons from Samantha's story Like many of us Samantha was literally forced to lose weight because of the onset of health problems and after being heavy for more than 5 years finally reached the point where she was sick and tired of carrying all the excess weight.
