Accuracy of scales

Postby ferg » Wed Jan 23, 2008 10:20 am

I have Weight Watchers electric scales. Why is it with practically any scales you can weigh yourself several times in a row and the results will vary slightly?

For example, this morning I weighed myself 4 times.

114
114
113.6
113.9

Should I go with the first reading or an average of 3 or more?

What is the best brand of electric scales to get?

i hear your pain!!

my scales are home are rather expensive body fat ones (not sure on the brand..)

anyways, they say one figure, and are pretty constant.. but then my weight watchers meeting scales are different!

i like my home ones, cause i weigh less on them!

you scales do the same thing. they change by 100g every time I get on them.

I am looking at getting a new set soon. Mine are very old!

I wouldn't waste the money on Tanita - there are so many "ifs" and "buts" that you end up NEVER weighing.

Like don't weigh:
after a drink of water
less than two hours after getting up
after exercise
after a meal
at night
after a bath or shower
anytime (OK, I made that up!)

Mine are all over the place, I use them once per month to check body fat but not sure why I bother.

I also have an old set of "Soenhle" German electronic scales that NEVER vary more than 200 grams in a day. They are great and have been for ten years. :D and A LOT cheaper than the Tanitas.

My advice is to get a good set of ordinary digital scales; weigh ONCE; accept the result, get off and get on with the next week!

Get a set that weigh in 100 gram increments though - otherwise you can become discouraged when you really have lost weight.

PS - If you want a cheap thrill let the batteries run down and your scales will tell you your weight is "LO"

Hey can I ask a question??

Why should you not weigh in less than 2 hours after getting up in the morning?

I just did a web search for the best time to weigh myself and every single result I got said first thing in the morning.
