I would say my ratio is 60% exercise, 40% diet. I had a SHOCKING diet week last week, but I exercised my ass off (1-3 hours a day), and I still lost. So i reckon its still important, Ive found that I am looking more toned and slimmer because of the exercise. I also want to get into running...
But yeah, once you start exercising you'll really notice the difference! I hope you get addicted to it like me, then its not a pain to go to the gym, and I quite enjoy it..
Just make sure when your in the gym alone you push yourself! I slack off a bit by myself... I really should do classes. Are you going to do pilates?
