I belive that being "addicted" to sugar or salty fatty foods is not the case, I belive it is tied to our emotions like you say, if your going through an emotional time, these food are comforting (well they are for me) when my dog died I went and ordered a large pizza from pizza hut (deep pan and all) and ate it all myself and then snacked on a whole packet of m&m's.
Also their is a link wiht eating salty foods and sugary food, if you eat salty foods it makes you crave sugary foods, not good either way
