Hello Everybody!

Postby Ezzz » Sat Oct 13, 2007 11:32 pm

I have already lost 10kgs so far with my own diet which I started at the start of September. I'm really surprised and happy with my progress so far but I feel I'll need more than the support of my family to continue. I'm almost 17½ and hope that I'll be close to my target weight of 100kgs by the time I start University in early 2009 (so I basically have 16 months to achieve this goal).
The three things have suddenly sparked my weight loss were:
*Our scales only read up to 140kgs (they are electronic).
*The appearance of sretch marks was the final straw for me and I decided to act before my obesity caused me to most likely die.
*Also the teasing at school is almost too much to handle, though most people in my year are friends with me and comfortably socialise with me but it is the lower years that really dish out the insults (those who haven't gotten to truely know the person I'm).

Well I hope the weight loss works and I hope I will find support among people who understand and are experiencing my situation.

That should say: "The three things that have suddenly sparked my weight loss are:"
I forgot to mention that I'm also male, (your gender is generally something you shouldn't forget, lol).

Hi there Ezzz - I think it's great that you've got a handle on this at a young age and are determined to make changes now rather than later. I also think it's great that you really seem to have separated your own self image from your body image :) I look forward to hearing about your progress!
Just keep moving! And don't be lazy...

I want to study 'Urban and Regional Planning' at either the University of Queensland or the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Thanks for the kind welcome and support folks.
I'm reasonably tall at 185cm so my target weight of 100kg will only have me just overweight (maybe just a little bit of a gut). My long term goal over the next 4-5 years is 85-90kgs but getting down to 100kgs before I leave home for Uni in 16 months I think is crucial to avoid any unnecessary health problems in the short-term or long-term.

Cool, I have a friend who works in Town Planning, I'm guessing that is the same thing? It's pretty interesting stuff!

Your goal of 100kg sounds more than reasonable. Many of the problems encountered are when you are obese - being overweight can make medical problems worse, and can increase your risk slightly of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, etc, but at your age, being a bit overweight would still be acceptable. Ideally, we'd all be at healthy weight, but that's not always possible!

Remember that the BMI tends to overestimate as well - especially for me - so if you have a lot of muscle your BMI will probably say you are overweight, when really you are healthy. Maybe when you get closer to goal you could weigh yourself and check your body fat percentage at the chemist and this will give you a better idea of where you're at.

Good luck :)

Hi, welcome! This place is cool, you'll like it!

I just wanted to add, school sucks. And it's stupid that as soon as the people in your own year are mature enough not to care that you're overweight, the little s***s in the lower year groups get bold enough to take over! I'll never forget an "I'm surprised she can even walk!" comment from some little yr7 a**hole one day, or the "fatty fatty boom booms" that seemed to accompany me on most bus trips with a particular yr4 kid.

Trust me though that uni is awesome, no matter what size you are, and the fact that you have that goal spurring you forwards is really cool!!!
