Having a takeway coffee in my hand actually helps me lose weight the same way smoking would. I drink veeeery slowly, so if i buy a coffee at 11am, and go shopping with a friend it's still in my hand at 12pm. If I have a mug of coffee beside me when I'm on the computer, I sip at it, and finish it quite a while later. But it distracts me from eating, because I feel I AM eating already.
Also it's one of the quickest things to make so it satisfies an urge almost immediately, which stops me from snacking. With skim milk and no sugar, my coffee is almost good for me!
