Peddling for my life

Postby fortyfour » Mon Mar 18, 2013 11:40 am

Hi. I cycle both my weight and my bike. In the last few months my weight has ballooned to over 83kg which is more than i've ever weighed before. I'm 165cm tall. I did that by sitting on my bum, and eating a lot of lollies (mainly) and not much else, especially in the later stages.

I've got a cycling trip planned starting Late May. Its been getting me down that i'm so out of shape. So much so that i wasn't looking forward to the trip but luckily, i guess, i had the flight booked and the show must go on.

I was getting nowhere by wishing things to change. Then one day something unpleasant happened and i was able to kick myself into gear. Since then (which is only about 10 days ago, i've been eating well and exercising every day. I'm down to 80.4kg today. And not struggling with cravings at all. I'm committed to my program. Its worked before and it will work this time too. My secondary concern though is that when the trip is over, i'll put the weight on all over again. I read an excellent article last year in the Australian weekend magazine about how losing more than 10% of body weight fairly rapidly is what causes the backlash appetite and a return to fatness. So this time i'm going to try to address that.

I'm following diet that's worked for me before. Its basically three meals a day, healthy food, zero sweets. Fruit if i get hungry between times for the most part of something else that's healthy. The other night i was up stupidly late and had a baked bean sandwich with one slice of bread.

I used to weigh myself every day but this time while i may hop on any time, i'm mainly only paying attention to the weekly weigh in. I do not have a problem with the scales going up and down day by day. I know what that's about.

This will be the second time i've started a food log online. It worked for me before. This time i may not be so obsessive about it. But when the mood takes me i will list my diet. Here's yesterday's menu. I do pretty much the same thing each day. And my rules are no sweets, avoid unhealthy foods when there are options of better things. A glass of wine at the end of the day is fine. Fruit is my main back up snack but i am relaxed about eating something else if i have to like i did the other night when i stayed up so late.

If anyone is looking at my diet for tips, the thing is i don't do a great deal of physical activity. I don't go out to work not even in an office so i can get by on less food than if i was working.

Breakfast is typically:
1 cup cornflakes
1 cup light milk
Coffee with full cream milk

Lunch - yesterday i was in town and had to get something from the supermarket as i couldn't wait to get home for a proper meal.
1 grainy type of bread roll
2 slices of jarlsberg cheese
1 250ml bottle of orange juice

1 glass of wine

Dinner - was also fairly untypical of what i've been eating lately
A largish bowl of (thin) fish soup made with coconut milk
a few green salad leaves
some cottage cheese on a piece of wholegrain toast no butter
1 big green olive.

Coffee throughout the day.

Exercise: a shortish walk with the dog - maybe about 20 minutes and a five minute jog.

All my dates are wrong but i have'nt missed a day since I started. Today is the 20th. Wednesday, though its now Thursday am. pffft

Anyway

breakfast
cornflakes and coffee as usual

Lunch
Leftover prawn biriyani - one of those rectangular tubs, the smaller one.
An orange and a pear.

coffee with milk here and there I suppose.

Dinner
1 cup of pasta (I forgot i'm supposed to be weighing it, not measuring it this time.)
3 spoons pasta sauce from a jar

Glass of white wine

I'm having a cup of hot water with a dash of milk right now. I've only just discovered that this is as satisfying as a cup of nescafe is usually.

No exercise today. I had to go out tonight for a few hours so no time and i was feeling yucky earlier in the day. My poor dog. I'll have to take her tomorrow before midday cause she must be really bored by now. Poor luv.

Feeling hungrish tonight so i had a snack

the rest of the biriyani that i had leftover from the other night.
some cucumber and some cottage cheese. and another cup of hot water with milk. Its late i thought it a good idea to avoid the coffee. I quite like this drink.

Note: it doesn't matter to me that i'm eating more than my three meals. I'm not guilt tripping myself about. Whats important is eating good foods. And keeping on with the program. It doesn't matter if the scales don't go down tomorrow so long as they keep progressively going down.

Last night i had one more eat before i went to bed at about 2am. I had 1 cup of fish soup made with coconut milk. so this is a high fat dish. But yesterday i was really quite peckish most of the day. Also my waking hours are pretty out of whack at the moment. I'm up late at night and eating my dinner quite early so i do get a bit hungry. I was drinking hot water and milk also but only had one pear. The other one was already past ripe.

24 march

The day isn't over yet but i want to note what i've eaten already. It would be good if i could edit the rest later but its not an option so i will have to make a new post.

Breakfast
cornflakes and coffee as usual

Lunch out and about
yummy wholegrain style bread roll with 1 large slice of jarlsberg cheese
cafe latte
green grapes

Exercise: i just don't want to do it. But i may be able to rouse myself later for a walk on the beach. I'll see how i feel.

Dinner tonight will probably be pasta as per recent days and salad vegies or sardines. I'm not too sure but i do like king oscar sardines and they were on special today so i bought four tins. I could probably use the protein and other nutrients right now too.

nah its not a problem really. My strategy is to avoid getting hungry. Or to keep it to a minimum.

Dinner
pasta as usual
salad with a carrot, bean sprouts, 1/2 capsicum.

exercise: long walk on the beach

26 March

Well if I am going to over indulge, this is the way to do it as far as i'm concerned.

breakfast
cornflakes as usual

Lunch in town
Sushi bar. Probably one plate more than i should have had.
cappuccino

Dinner at a french restaurant - not cheap but good service and a nice treat
Glass of sav blanc
Canape - a tiny little french toast with some very tasty vegies and proscuitto on top
bread roll with butter
entree - scallops in a sauce of some description
main - rack of lamb - which i had for the first time in my life and which was delicious. I didnt' like the "aubergine caviar" though it was ruined by anchovies. So i didn't eat that.
dessert - three types of creme caramel. First bite was good but then i realised it wasn't baked but cooked in a saucepan so i was a bit let down by that. Also one of these would have been fine but three of them came on the plate. I managed to pass up the parfait thing with icecream and cream.
coffee - with a little biscuit

So i didn't exercise today either. I'm a bit disappointed in myself because in the last two weeks i've enjoyed doing the hill walk. Instead i went to a movie. Today im feeling depressed. In fact i don't know if i will ever get passed the depression that has settled in on me. Its not a deep depression but i would rather not have to go on living to be honest.

No need for pep talks. They just annoy me so don't do it please.
