Hi Everyone,

Well since the Thursday after Easter (after we got paid and got some healthy food in the house), I have lost 1.4kg!
So, things are looking better! I have been eating really well, not so much exercise happening yet, but I'm just happy to get my eating under control for now.

Congrats to everyone on their weight losses.

I'm so happy to record a loss for the first time in this challenge!! yay!!

Damn it! I just wrote a huge email about my loss this week, then the stupid explorer neded to refresh and I lost it all

Anyway to make it short...

I weighed in this morning on my WiiFit like every other Monday morning. I chose -1kg for my clothing weight...as usual...and I got a weightloss of 1.7kgs!
I have no idea how this happened, but thinking maybe that my metabolism is finally getting quicker now that I've made exercising twice daily a habit, (35mins cardio=15kms) keeping my meal portions down and trying to drink plenty of water and fluids. Who knows!? But I'm not going to complain because next week I might not have a loss at all...was just a bit of a shock that's all.

Hope everyone has a fantastic week, keep happy and have fun!

Well done on your losses, WnD, JL, SL (JewelleryLover and Secret Loss - sorry, I'm a lazy typist! If you'd prefer your full monikers let me know).

JL, in answer to your question: yes, too few calories can slow your weight loss. To understand why you need to look at the human body as a product of evolution by natural selection. In nomadic and early agrarian times the biggest threat to survival was starvation. Survival favoured those who could last long periods with little food. It's why we prefer the taste of high calorie over low calorie foods and why most of us find it easier to put on weight than to lose it. Those who had extra weight in times of famine had a greater chance of surviving and producing a new generation.

Our bodies have the ability to change our metabolism in times of famine. By slowing the metabolism fewer calories are burned so you can survive longer on less food. The body can't tell the difference between famine and a strict diet, so if you restrict your calories too much your body freaks out and goes into 'starvation mode'. You will still lose weight, but it will be at a slower rate. Worse still you burn more muscle. During normal, safe weight loss the body burns both fat and muscle. This is the reason why muscle building exercise is so important in a weight loss program. If your body goes into starvation mode it starts increasing the proportion of muscle that is burned while preserving as much fat as possible. It's why anorexics are at risk of dying of heart attacks. The body wastes the heart muscle to the point where it simply doesn't work any more. Frightening stuff.

Restricting your calories to 'starvation mode' is a really bad idea. Not only does it slow weight loss and decrease your muscle mass, the slow down in weight loss can mislead people into further cutting calories which compounds the problem.

As to my results this week: either 69.8kg (Saturday's weigh in) or 70.4kg (today's). I'm not sure which recording to take as the 'official' weigh in. Saturday's puts me back under 70kg which is nice, but today's means more scope for loss for next week!

I'm still busy as hell with uni. I really want to increase my exercise while the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. At least my lack of time favours high impact exercise. I'm going to find a way to get twenty minutes on the elliptical trainer each day. Wish me luck!

Thanks for that Ali!

Everything you said makes sense- and the slowing weightloss does have the tendency to make me go- oh well I might as well eat what I want because either way I'm only losing a tiny amount. So then I binge on unhealthy things. It's a vicious cycle! A big part of it is learning not to be scared of calories in general and remembering that it's important to keep the meals reasonable, as long as I'm eating the right things!

Well done on almost being at your goal- you must be so excited!!!

Hi all, weighed in this morning at 62.7kg, a loss of 1.1kg.

WnD, I've never tried censored but anything you enjoy will keep you going back for more, I think that's the secret with exercise. good on you for finding something you love doing.

Weigh in today...94.1kg. A loss of 1kg. I'm very happy with that. At least i'm going down and not up for a change!

I'm feeling very positive about the new program I am on. It is working for me and i'm not having any cravings for carbs or chocolates or anything of that nature. Hubby bought home a mudcake yesterday and I have not been tempted by it at all...which is a big surprise!
We went out for dinner and I ordered the healthiest choice on the menu, with no carbs, low fat and it was delicious and I felt extremely satisfied afterwards.
How is everyone else doing this week??

Wow Kelvinator and Wheel n Deal you both made great progress this week- well done! :D

I'm cranky with myself because the scales tell me I've gained 100grams this week. I know that's a minimal amount and could just be salt or fluid but I really thought I was going to have a substantial loss this week and as a result I avoided mid-week weighing cos I wanted a surprise this morning. And surprise- I've gained! grrrrrr :x

Guys I'm appealing for some motivational tid bits because I need to get really serious this week. :|

Good luck to those yet to weigh in- if anyone has any ideas or thoughts for me then PLEASE- let me know!!

Look on the bright side, JL. At least your scales have only told you you've gained 100g. Mine say I've gained a whole kilo! I was down to 69.8kg during the week again and today I'm back up to 70.8kg. The only explanation I can think of is that I have a cold and feel like I've gained my body weight in mucous. Sorry for the TMI but I feel BLAH!

The worst thing is that I was doing really well with my exercise. I don't have time for dedicated exercise, but any time I had to run an errand I'd jog sections of it to emulate beginners interval training. I'm trying to track down some affordable running shoes too. I figure I'll find time to run, even if only on weekends, if the prospect of running seems more attractive. My current shoes exacerbate my plantar fasciitis so that's a real turn-off. Prolonged and constant pain does NOT make me want to run!

It's getting bloody depressing. I feel like I'm in a really frustrating holding pattern right now. Two steps forward, two steps back. But I'm going to soldier on. I have a feeling this is going to be a soup week thanks to this rotten cold. So I'll include salads as snacks, keep my starchy carbs down to a minimum, and ban all alcohol (except for Friday night which is a friend's going away party). Even if it doesn't shed that nasty kilo at least I'll feel better for it.

Congrats to all who've had a loss. Empathy and commiserations to those like me who've gained!

Hey girls, how is everyone :D

Ok, so I'm just popping in quickly to say hi. We are heading home tomorrow and when we get back I will try and catch up with how everyone is going.

I have had a wonderful holiday and pretty much eaten what I wanted to. I decided not to weigh myself and not worry about what I was eating...I just didn't want to have to worry about anything for two whole weeks! So I jumped on the scales today (first time in 2 weeks! Pretty good for me since I usually weigh myself daily) just to see what the damage is.........and to my surpise not as bad as I thought :D :D I am 76.9kg, so thats only up about half a kilo, and from the way I've been eating I was expexting 3 kg.

Gosh I'm not looking forward to 2 days of driving :( Can't wait for that to be over!

Hope you are all well :)

hello everybody!
Well, I'm sort of feeling depressed about my weighin this morning...gained a whole 1.3kg, but I haven't done any exercise since last thursday and ate way too much over the weekend. Also been sick and had a fuction on away from home. Oh well, i'm feeling motivated again this morning and will be back on the bike tonight. Guess losing 1.7kg last week has come back to bite me in the butt! lol...

well done to everyone on their losses and keep up the good work.

Hi everyone,

I got a shot of optimism (from somewhere) and i've kicked my butt seriously into gear. I signed up to calorie king yesterday and did my usual 1.5hr weights/cardio session plus body balance last night and i'm trying "the secret" method: putting my goal for this week out to the universe and focussing on what I want. 600grams loss (minimum, obviously I'd be rapt with more!)

600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600 600

:D

Hopefully next monday will see results that reinforce my current levels of determination and I will finally be on my way, out of this annoying plateau!

Congrats to everyone this week- we're about 1/3 the way through the challenge and I can see great things from all of us by June 8th!

Have a great week everybody!
