Tinkerbella,
You are doing the right thing keeping off it while it is too sore to weightbear.
No weightbearing does make you feel SO incapacitated soooo....send your son or your husband to the chemist and hire yourself some crutches. NOT the ones that go under your arms, but the ones that have grips on your forearms (like this:
http://wheelchairsandstuff.com.au/asset ... utches.jpg). These ones are much much more comfortable and easier to use, plus they give you the use of your hands when you stand still (the grips hang onto you and nothing needs propping up or goes crashing over - toilets are easy with these

).
You are tall, so make sure you get long ones - no point in creating more aches by stooping. Most you can self adjust very easily (but get the right size to begin with; from experience because I'm also tall, some chemist staff don't know that there are different sizes and will try and give you short ones). If you are able to go with your hubby or son, then that can be good too, as the chemist can size them up and adjust them for you and the spot - and you can insist on getting them comfortable. The last time I needed crutches, they were pushing a pair on me that had very uncomfortable hand pads. I knew there were better ones out there, so I went elsewhere and got a functional pair; afterall, you are going to be putting all your weight on your hands all the time when you are using them. It's good to know they are not all the same and you have options to get yourself comfortable! Probably also worth phoning the chemist in advance so that you can find a chemist who does stock the tall ones and hires them out and has them available.
I know you will probably feel this is overkill, but it totally isnt. It will get you mobile and functional even if all you need them for is a couple days. And YES, being able to get around your home WITHOUT WEIGHT BEARING is important when you have an injury. It is also not very expensive, and quite an easy thing to do. Your body and your sanity will thank you.
So says the voice of experience - just go do it girl! And I hope you get better very quickly. I am fairly finicky with my body these days, so I'd be getting to a physio or a Dr just so you know what it is and the expected recovery time. You can then put your mind at rest about whether you can do your Melbourne trip.
Hey, I did a Sydney trip on crutches! It's possible!
