STATION TO STATION ANTARCTICA CHALLENGE (KMS)

mary_in_adelaide wrote:I have really enjoyed the Adelaide to Darwin KMs challenge...a great motivator to get my bottom out of bed in the morning. My only gripe is that when I try to imagine where I'm supposed to be walking it's too damned hot.

In case I miss the end of the current challenge (one of you cyclists will finish it off while I'm not looking I'm sure :)) I thought I'd put in a vote for where we could go for our next challenge...and I was thinking about somewhere lovely and cool with zero humidity

How about we walk from Mawson Station in Antarctica to McMurdo Station in Antarctica? It'll be cool (ok COLD) but dry (Antarctica is considered a desert as there is no rain). This map shows both stations (Mawson is on the right near the top, McMurdo is on the bottom in the middle) http://www.antarcticconnection.com/antarctic/stations/index.shtml

This site has great info about Antarctica http://www.coolantarctica.com/index.html

It was hard to find an exact distance between the two stations (or between any other two points down there) due to the pesky mountains and icebergs but the around 4200kms seemed to be about right.

I hope you all don't mind me doing this. A few of us expressed an interest in this challenge and well since we'll all be chomping at the bit to get our recent km's down somwhere this is as good a challenge as any. This one moves us from Mawson Station (Australian territory) and takes us to McMurdo Station (US territory) all whilst staying within Antarctica. The url's Mary has provided have heaps of info for those of us who like to see where we're going so check them out. Pack your booties and gloves it's gonna be a cold trek across antarctica...current temp at Mawson Station is -0.2 C and falling. :D  Let's goooo......

Yep we call her magical Kate....okay not really but it has a nice ring to it! Don't worry we can always call in the huskies for some extra oomph should anyone need it. :D

Over the last 3 days I have walked, jogged, cycled and rowed 20.2kms...actually it was probably more but that's what I could figure.

New balance = 4161.3kms

Wooo Hooo :) :) :) :)
I'm so thrilled to be in Antarctica...so nice and cool down here...when it's 40 damned degrees like it's been lately I can at least visualise icebergs and penguins

10.1kms walking today

new balance = 4151.2kms
Cheers, Mary

If I could find a ticker for measurements it would say I'm on the way from a waist measurement of 134cm to one of 70cm (currently at 129cm)

Definitely Ally!!! Maybe what we should do is go from one member's town/city to another's next time! Say go from Ally's to Mary's or something like that! But lets get across Antartica first. And I don't think we can have help from the huskies cos I don't think they are allowed there anymore cos they crap too much!!! :P

This morning - 11.2km cross trainer, 3.6km treadmill and 2.8km walk with the dog. Total - 17.6km.

New balance - 4129.6km to go

you dont sound silly at all :) we start off with a certain amount of kilometres. for this particular challenge its 4200km. now when you do any form of exercise that shows kilometres- like bike riding, exercise equipment, walking, running etc etc you deduct the amount of kilometres you have done from the total. with everyone deducting the kilometres they do we will eventually get down to 0km which means we wouldve crossed the antartic or perth to sydney or adelaide to darwin etc etc. (that imagination coming into play!)

so say you went and did a walk for 3km you would get on here and see where the kilometres are at from the last person who posted and then you deduct your 3km from it.
