Help with late night eating!

Postby Fiona25 » Thu Jan 17, 2008 6:51 am

Before I started on this journey, I would eat lots at night. Just snacking infront of the TV or on the computer - usually was chocolate and coffee, ice-cream or cake - the bad things!

I thought I had kicked this habbit and started eating nothing after dinner (after 7-7:30 at the latest) so would drink tea and things to help - it was going great.

I don't know what has happened but now i'm finding myself wanting to snack again at night and i'm not even hungry! Not full, but not hungry.

Last night I had a slim secrets mintabolism bar around 8:30pm, and the night before 2 WW icec-creams

I'm going shopping today and won't be getting anymore WW IC's, low carb choc or any of those treats I tend to want to eat at night but what else can I do?

I'm not eating really fatty stuff, but this late night eating is affecting my weight loss I reckon. Do you think its just a case of willpower?

Normally i'd go for a walk or something and that does the trick with a cup of tea afterwards, but its been raining non stop and I was so tired after work that I didn't do anything!

All suggestions are welcome, or give me a pep talk and tell me to have some willpower!!!

those slim secrets bars are kinda tasty, aren't they? hehe.

i've asked my trainer about this before and his suggestion was to make sure a snack in the evening is mostly protein - he said either a little tin of tuna or a protein shake.

other than that - what about cutting a slim secrets bar into 2 or 3 pieces & then just having one piece? just to give you that feeling that you've had something.

do you drink green tea at all? i find that makes me feel fuller than regular tea (or coffee).

in regards to willpower, it might have something to do with it if you're really not hungry. normally id'say exercise to take your mind off it, but i think you do plenty of that already!

sorry - i'm not much help

I am not really the one to be offering advice as I'm the world's worst at this! I crave food really badly after dinner, but try to pick on something not too bad.... like raw vegges, sugar free lollies, or a jarrah chocolatte hot chocolate. I try to stay out of the kitchen if at all possible, as I have figured out that my eating can be visually stimulated, so "out of sight, out of mind" works really well. I find brushing my teeth does not work because as soon as I've done that, the first thing I want to do is eat something, even though I know it will taste bad! I've also been having dinner a lot later as I've been going to the gym after work, so there's less "after dinner" time to torture me :P Sorry, not much help

Me again! What about doing some relaxation? I have got some hypnosis/relaxation tapes that I've been listening to the last couple of nights that seem to distract me at least for a little while. Or anything else that you find really relaxing... to calm that awful "I want to eat" feeling...

I have this problem myself and I've done 2 things to combat it.

The first is to try and have dinner as close to your cut off as possible (my eating curfew is 8pm) so I try to eat dinner between 7-7.30 (no carbs after 4 though!).

If I start to feel hungry (well - to be honest I'm not hungry, probably just bored and eating out of habit) I clean my teeth! Who wants to eat after that...yuck!

Good luck!! Let us know how you go!
