'Due' is a murky term, I'm afraid. The answer is: when my supervisor says it's good enough. I haven't received my draft back from her yet, but I already know there are changes I need to make. :(

Since I'm not writing right now I thought I'd go back to the applied project that is at the centre of the thesis. I've discovered that since I 'finished' it, the technology it's based on has been superseded by something far more brilliant. On the one hand it's frustrating; I spent a year building that bloody design and it's now obsolete. On the upside it's a bonus; it solves a few of the problems I was having with the old technology's capabilities; tech based PhDs are always outdated by the time they're published so my examiners won't be too critical; and because the new tech is still buggy I can emulate the desired solution just by rendering a 3D animation, which will look miles better than my first project.

When life hands you lemons, make orangeade. It baffles the @#$% out of everyone.

Thanks for that link, Fi. The brain certainly is a glycogen hog. The only time I crave carbs more than when I'm studying is when I have a migraine. Speaking of which, I should get my latest 3D work done and move away from the computer. Owie head.

Great to see you too, Whit3tig3y!

I'm still slogging away at my thesis. I just popped in to announce that I'm an auntie! My little baby niece entered the world at just over 6 lb on Saturday night. Mum, baby and daddy are all doing well. :D

Hi Miss Viva. I'm still kicking about. I mostly pop in to deal with the spammers these days. I don't have anything to report on the weight loss front. Too damn busy to exercise and eat carefully! I've gone off organics somewhat because I couldn't afford to buy heaps of fresh fruit and veg. I was filling up on carbs instead and it wasn't good for my weight loss. Hopefully now that I'm eating a lot more salad and fruit I'll start losing weight again. Aside from that, I'm still desperately trying to get my thesis finished. How are you going?

Still muddling along. As per usual my focus is on my thesis, not on weight loss. So I gained a couple of kilos over the last month. I'll have a draft of my thesis ready in the next few days so while my supervisor goes over it I can start concentrating on my health again. So I've made a list of New Year's resolutions to kick off 2011:
- Lose weight
- Become fluent in Esperanto
- Finish this bloody thesis
- Get full-time work
- Get back into painting

I'm still trying for a baby, but that's increasingly looking like it's out of my hands. To be honest, the more I hear about pregnancy and childbirth the more I like the sounds of becoming a foster parent!

After I've sent off my thesis draft I'll update my progress thread with my exercise and eating plan. So far the plan is just to make healthier choices for each meal. I'll keep you posted!

I hope you all have a safe and happy New Year!

Hi EvilWombatQueen & Happy New Year

Fascinated that you are intending to become fluent in Esperanto - I had a try at it about 30 years ago, but there was never anybody to talk to. Of course the world has moved on now, and just about everyone uses English as a lingua franca. Good luck with it, it must sound like a beautiful language when spoken in conversation, and the structure and regularity always appealed to me.

Saluton Bren!

It's great to meet other people who have learned Esperanto in the past! Although English has rapidly been adopted as the worldwide lingua franca the number of Esperantists has grown worldwide due to the World Wide Web. I've spent the last year learning online at lernu.net where they have forums to practice and ask questions and I have a few lesson books to help me. When I have a bit of free time I'll be joining the local Melbourne Esperanto club and Skyping with people around the world to practice my pronunciation and conversation skills. The thing I love most about Esperanto is that it is so easy to learn compared to other languages. I could hold up a basic conversation after only a few weeks of learning, and given how little time I have to devote to learning it right now that's pretty remarkable!

Did you end up choosing to learn another language after giving up Esperanto? Have you ever been tempted to take up Esperanto again?

Sadly, I did not learn another language, but I was intensely interested in following the origins of words, and the similarities across languages. I suppose that is one of the things I found interesting about Esperanto - it deriving of words from all across the the European group of languages.
I did half-heartedly attempt to learn Dutch and Russian at various times, but appart from learning the Cyrillic alphabet, and a couple of hundred words, I didn't get very far. I should have gone to classes, but I think my experience with learning French at school kind of put me off. I believe the teaching of languages has really progressed since the 60's.
I can't see myself learning a language now, I have too many other things on my plate, like you the study, moving to back to Melbourne and getting work etc. Maybe when I am too old for anything else (not too far away) I might give a go.
