I'm a 34 year old guy with at least 30kg to lose. I have 2 daughters aged nearly 3 and 5 with another on the way. I have been overweight for a long time but have recently started developing a few medical problems - gout, heartburn, IBS problems, snoring and sleep apnea.

My doctor has challenged me to lose at least 30kg in 6 months. My wife has agreed to be my mentor and trainer.

10 reasons why I want to lose weight:

1. To look and feel good
2. To be fit and healthy
3. To be able to wear whatever clothes I like
4. Reduce health problems such as gout, liver damage, heartburn
5. To stop snoring
6. To be able to sleep in my own bed again (due to snoring)
7. To have a better censored life
8. To live longer and be around to see my grandchildren
9. For overall happiness and to boost my self esteem
10. So I can get a tattoo

Current weight: 113.5kg
Height: 178cm
Goal weight: 83kg
Current waist: 128cm

I aim to lose weight in the following ways:

1. Make healthy food choices
2. Eat only when hungry
3. Smaller servings
4. Drink at least 2 litres H20 daily
5. Reduce alcohol intake
6. Stop drinking Coke products
7. Start by exercising on treadmill for 30 min x 3 times p/wk
8. Take homemade lunches to work

Forgot to mention yesterday I started my exercise. I did a 30 minute walk on the treadmill (level 5.5) including a 5 min warm-up and warm-down.

Thanks everyone. I am going to break down my weight loss into 5kg mini weight loss goals. I will not get obsessive about measuring myself. I will weigh and measure weekly every Wednesday morning.

Mini Goal 1: 113.5kg - 5kg = 108.5kg

That's a great plan Ferg. I think it's great that you listed your reasons for losing weight, too. That way any time you're not feeling as enthusiastic about healthy eating or exercise (and let's face it we all have those moments) you'll be able to look back at why you're doing this and find new motivation.

I also love the fact you're breaking it into 5kg mini-goals. When you look at it in small steps it becomes so much more achievable.

Good luck!

My first weekly weigh in and I have put on 500g. I weigh 114kg. I ate healthily all week (except pizza one night), took homemade healthy lunches to work every day, did 3 x 30 minute brisk walks on the treadmill. I guess I didn't cut down on alcohol and continued to drink Coke.

Goals for the week:

1. Aim for at least one alcohol free day
2. Continue with healthy eating
3. Increase exercise to one extra 30 minute session on treadmill.

Exercise Days: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

It's a pain we are unable to edit or update previous posts. I also wanted to add another goal of mine is to be able to return to playing squash 2 nights a week at the high skill level I am capable of. In order to do this, I will need to be under 100kg.

Hi!

And welcome to the forum!

Best wishes for your weight loss journey.

You seem to have thought through the process extremely well.

Perhaps try Coke Zero instead??? All the taste - no sugar!

Yell out if you need anything.

-Lauren.
To succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you - Myself (Lauren)

I've been using mostly Coke Zero. Today's weekly weigh in: 113.9kg. I have only lost 100gm.

100g is fine. At least your weight is headed in the right direction! I know how depressing it is to be losing weight so slowly when you modify your lifestyle so much, but if you'd been losing 'only' 100g per week for the last couple of years you'd be at your goal weight by now. So even if it takes you two years to get there at least you'll be getting there! It may be some small comfort to know that statistically the slower you lose the weight the more likely you are to keep it off. Hang in there. It could be worse, I've been on a plateau with no weight loss for the last month. And given I gained weight over Christmas and New Year that's not good!

Anyway, the fact you didn't lose more could be caused by many things. You could be retaining water from the heat, from not drinking enough water, or even from eating salty foods. Also, have you checked the portion sizes and calorie counts of the healthy foods you are eating? For years I couldn't understand why I was gaining weight with a vegan diet. It turned out to be portion sizes, lack of exercise and choosing the wrong 'healthy' foods (I loved curries made with coconut milk. When I found out how much fat and how many calories it contained I nearly died!)

Above all, don't stress. This whole weight loss thing seems to be a bit of trial and error for most of us. If there were one trick that worked for everyone there wouldn't be so many diet plans out there! Chances are you'll find what the problem is and bounce back next week!

Yup, the others are right. You're heading in the right direction and even if the scales don't show it, you body is thanking you for every healthier decision you've made :)
