I lived in Ireland for a year, and they get really annoyed when people call Halloween an "american" tradition - it originated in Ireland! And they get right into it too, with bonfires and trick or treating and the rest!
I actually knew this...and that's now a completely different tradition IMHO to the American one as far as I know. As per usual, pagan traditions mutated (e.g. Easter and Christmas were hybridised also between the Christian traditions of Christ's birth and death/ressurection and the pagan traditions of winter solstice and fertility traditions) Now I think even Christmas and Easter are no longer the traditions they were. They all seem to have turned into commercialised consumer fests. Bah Humbug
