Usually you can still read, but you just cant post. There is usually a variety of ways that you can have forums. Read but not post until you have done the verification thing... wait for admin approval before being able to post...

You can usually pick them by the names the use as they are sooooooooooooo dicky i just usually scroll through the posting and 95% of the time the name i pick is the spammer lol

phpBB is really bad for spamming I admin a forum that's shocking for spammers etc etc! Best thing to do is make the user names admin approved that way the admins can check up on fakies and approve the people who are really wanting to join in. You can make it so that the Admins receive emails when people join up making it easy to know when the approval is needed
