private phone number

Postby holly80 » Tue Apr 15, 2008 8:23 pm

I have had enough. I just answered the phone to a recorded msg. CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE JUST WON A TRIP TO THE CARRABIAN (SP?) PUSH 9 TO CLAIM YOUR PRIZE. I am so sick of it. we get everyone calling us all the time.

Does anyone know how much it costs to get your number put to private? Do you have to change your nunber as it would be in old phone books?

You can register your number on a do not call list - we did that and it has reduced our calls. As with most govt things it's a bit of paperwork, but here's the link https://www.donotcall.gov.au/

I'm guessing the cost of going to a private number would depend on your provider.

I use to get loads of those calls & so I joined the Do not call register & haven't had any calls like that in months! Its free so I suggest you take the time to register.

FYI - Having a silent number costs $3 a month. If you advise them you are getting harrassing phone calls they may change your number for free, but if they charge its about $34.

Normally its the same will all carriers, however some may add extra on top of Telstra's charge. Telstra does all the work when it comes to that type of thing no matter who you are with so they on charge your provider (I worked for them for 6 years so I know a bit about it all)

But try to get them to change it for free, make out like the calls are really annoying and stressful.

and avoid entering raffles and competitions - particularly on line. It they ask for your phone number, you can almost be sure they will give it to someone to call you.

Aaargh I HATE those calls... grrr! We are on the Do Not Call Register and we STILL get theM!?!? I had a call on my mobile today asking if I wanted to be involved in a work-from-home business opportunity with a 'low' investment of $6000-7000!! I was like umm.. no thanks!!!
I agree with the others - avoid giving your number out, keep it for friends, family, jobs etc etc... I've given mine out too freely and I've had a few annoying calls :(

The do not call site does wonders I use to get them all the time & since I registered I havent had one since. & you can register your mobile number as well.
If you are registered if you get any calls keep in mind that you can report the company & they will cop a fine.

Keep in mind that the "Do Not Call" register can only be used for Residential phones. Telemarketing companies can still legally call your mobile, even if you have added it to the register. A business number, or a home phone that is also jointly listed in the yellow pages or has tax credits as being used for business purposes is also exempt from the legislation.

Also Market Researchers can still call you. They are not exempt from the Do Not Call registry.

No they aren't trying to sell you anything :D they are just conducting surveys - usually political polls you see appearing in news papers & the news and other fun surveys :D

Can you tell I used to work for a Market Research Firm :D back in my early years whilst in uni.
