Office refurnishing

Postby Freddy » Sat Nov 29, 2008 4:06 am

So in a few weeks from now the office will be turned upside down entirely. The huge, inefficient desks are leaving and cubicles will be the new company style.

I know you can easily decorate cubicles, but there are some hidden issues in this. For instance, the cubicle 'walls' in between the desks will be made of glass. So it's see through. My guess is I should be even more careful with putting up stuff on the walls then...

What are your opinions? What can, and what can't I put up on the walls? Where are the boundries in this issue? I know I can't wallpaper the entire walls with pictures of my wife and kid, how far can I take this?

If you want to play it safe, gauge your decorating by how much your boss and colleagues decorate. At first just take in one or two photos. You can always add to them later if the coast is clear. To be really safe, in case they don't want blu-tac on the glass, take in framed photos. No-one can object to framed photos on your desk! See how far others go before you start adding to your cubicle.

It really depends on how relaxed your workplace is. I'm lucky. My uni is pretty relaxed about how you decorate your desk (it's the design faculty so I'd be worried otherwise!) However I mainly just have uni related stuff plastered around the place. Most other people have more personal stuff up on their walls. At other places I've worked at in the past I've gone nuts decorating my cubicle, but admittedly I didn't give a sh1t if they objected and fired me.

If you're unsure and want to find out your office's limits it's probably best to talk to your boss about it in casual conversation.

i'd tackle it differently. Go all out with your favorite motivational funny posters, then see who complains. No one i bet. Change them regularly and keep the office laughing =) Point some outwards too :D

I would put my photos around the edges, like a border, so it's neat and you can still see through.
I would also make some paper snowflakes to stick on the glass, but I tend to overdo things...

My wife gave me a digital photoframe, so there's no need putting up pictures anymore. All I need to do now is make sure I don't put pictures on it that are too funky for work ;)

I used to be rather infamous for going over the top with my workspace!

I was at Telstra for 6 years and needed 3 people to help me carry all my stuff to my car when I left!! hahaha

And this is the mess we're in right now. All stuffed along two walls working on a 100Mb connection with 16 others. I sure hope the new tech support room will finish next week so we'll have our personal dedicated 100Mb line again ;)

I'm taking my digital photoframe to work with some awesome pictures of my wife and my daughter. I've read that wives and children are a representative of daring to get into long term relationships which should be seen as a pro through your employers eyes.

What fun! We've recently done the same at my work - I moved from my won office to a cubicle situation. All I had on my little wall was a calendar, with small animals on it... so I could write in all the things I had to look forward to outside work. Mostly Vanessa Amorosi concerts lol.

I reckon you should be able to put anything... but beware of posting up swimsuit models and the like. It's a standard and expected thing in the military, but not sure it would go down so well in a civvie office
