i find the shops in the city dont offer as much as the shops in the "burbs"... so i would go with westfield parramatta in syd...

or waringa mall... apparently its really big and flashy.

or DFO = direct factory outlet, just off homebush bay drive
30 kilos and counting

lost for this week, 1.4 kilos... getting there.

For sports gear and outdoor gear, Smith Street Collingwood (only 10 mins by tram from the CBD)
For brand outlets, either DFO in Spencer Street or Bridge Road in Richmond (again 10 mins from the CBD by tram)
For groovy boutiques, Chapel Street and Greville Street Prahran. The further up Chapel Street towards Toorak Road, the more expensive and also the more 'chain' you get.

I also hear Doncaster Shopping town is really good now that they've refurbed and added new stores - everything is orderly so all the shoe shops are together, menswear, womens wear etc. But I haven't been out there yet.
Just keep moving! And don't be lazy...

I can't add anything more to what San said. She's listed all the major hot shopping spots in Melbourne.

One piece of advice: If you're on a budget the further south down Chapel Street you go, the cheaper many of the shops get.
Toorak = Insanely pricey
South Yarra = pricey
Prahran = Somewhat affordable
Windsor = Lots of op shops!

I live about five minutes from Chapel Street (arse-end in St Kilda), but sadly as a student I can rarely enjoy its shoppingly pleasures. :(
