I hate my job!

Postby whit3tig3y » Tue May 12, 2009 3:28 pm

Yes i'm having a whine.

I hate my job.

I have nothing to do. Literally, no work. And if I ask for work, I get told my manager will find me something just give him some time, and he never does. And I bet i'm going to get the boot for sitting on the internet all day, but what else do I have to do?

Its not like I have work to do and don't do it, thats for sure. I just, don't have any!

This is not fair. I could be doing alot more productive things right now, like my course. Maybe when i've finished my course I should get a new job so I'd have things to do.

Hey Whit
I kinda know the feeling. I have a masters degree and another degree and i work in the family business running the marketing department. Sometimes i am flat out but other times (like this time of year) i am twiddling my thumbs. It is horrible because i know i could be doing so much more in another position.
I have looked around for work but there is barely anything in my field going at the moment unless i want to take an entry level position - which, with a new mortgage, i am not going to settle for! So right now i am treading water and contemplating starting up my own business....
So much to think about!

Have you talked about this with the boss himself?

Then there's two things you can do (imho). Either find a new job yourself, or you get sacked and have to find a new job anyway.

I don't know you're work situation so you may think this is obvious/ wont work, or you've already tried it ....
Could there be a project you could make up to do? Maybe look at the business plan/ organisational goals/ talk to others about what needs changing or something that has been neglected? Alternatively, is there any professional development that you could attend and maybe come back with some ideas to work on?

It is such a pity that you are wasting your time. There is always productive work a person can be doing, it's a matter of identifying it. The fact your boss hasn't given you anything to do, my best guess would be that they are having difficulty coping, don't have the delegation skills so don't have the time or energy to work it out? If they look flat out, could you say to them that they look very busy, and ask if there is any way you can help them out? They may view this as a different question to "I haven't any work, what can I do?" They also may appreciate that someone has recognised that they are working hard. If they still dont give you any, I wonder if the don't know what they are doing.....

There is an old joke about the Public Service that rings true in some sense in employment - A person is promoted until they reach a position in which they are incompetent. Then they spend the rest of their career in that job.

Yeah the thing is my workplace is really weird. They dont like change and they dont like suggestions. The place has just had a huge organisational and processes review, everythings set it stone. The fact is that they didnt really think through my job role. They gave me all these tasks to do that had so much work... but thats because there was a backlog because there wasnt enough people to do it. Now that i've come in, got rid of the backlog, the tasks themselves take maybe 15-20mins a day. They've given me this "huge task" of revenue forcasting... once again i only have to update it once a week.. i dont see how thats a huge task. It takes half an hour a week.

I dont know whats going on, but I really do hate it. Its been this way for the 2 years ive been working there.. i've been in 4 different positions AND departments at this company.. and every single one has left me with no work to do. There are about 2-3 people that have no work to do that i know of.. so its not just me. The company needs to get their act together.

Think career change. My friend just finished an [commercial link removed] and says it's a fun way to teach your clients some exercise. She's happy with her new job.
