Diana Nyad at the age of 64 became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida (177km) without a shark cage (and only one person has done it with a cage). This was her 5th attempt at the swim. She was in the water for 52 hours. Her tongue and lips were swollen so much that she was slurring her speech. Her final word as she set off in this successful attempt was "courage!".
In an interview before her 2011 attempt which was abandoned because of two attacks from deadly box jellyfish (which kills more people in that area than do sharks) she said: "I think this is the prime. When one reaches this age, you still have a body that's strong but now you have a better mind."
After finally reaching her dream, she staggered up to the Florida beach to the waiting crowd. Completely spent, a friend supports her but before she seeks the urgent medical attention she requires she tells the crowd in a slurred hoarse voice that she has three things that she wants to tell them. Holding up her fingers she counts them off..."One - never give up. Never ever give up! Two - you are never too old to chase your dream! And three - it looks like a solitary sport, but its a team!"
