Fat Truck

Postby Chelle » Wed Feb 28, 2007 10:40 am

Talking about obese I went to father in-law house the other week, he recieved a phone call from on of his neighbours to come down & have a look at the fat truck bring your granchildren with you, we are all thinking what are they on about, so we all go out side, & think there is an ambulance on no someone is in trouble, much to amaze it on a family member son who was the ambulance driver driving the fat truck just visiting while he had been up at lismore, coffs harbour & kempsey to transporting really obese people, I never even knew there was such a thing, It was really an eye opener to see, like it had a wheelchair that was triple the size of a normal one, The hydrolic lift the children thought it was amazing, to really lean about the fat truck yes that is what it is called there are only 3 made in nsw they are held at the rpa hospital & the ambulance transport the whole nsw population of really obese to the local hospital or transport them to the sydney hospital. The truck can also be used for transorting explosive & dangerous chemicals around as well.
I just think that it is so sad to know how many people that can't get out & about out of there home's because of obeseity I guess you don't really think of those people that need help because you don't see them & it probley dosen't cross our minds. Obeseity is a disease & I gather people on this forum see the signs & are doing somthing about it & not letting your self get to that stage & be overweight.

Sorry but I am going to throw a spanner in the works and ask how the heck is obesity a disease.....we control what is shoved into our mouths and please I don't want to hear.....but it is uncontrolable...we have all got to be overweight or obese by over indulging in food and I don't see how it can be a disease, it is a case of just not knowing when to stop or not caring enough to stop!!!! There are only a very small percentage of people who can claim medically that their obesity is from medical conditions which makes them not be able to lose weight!

Hey alley
I have done some resarch on the web to find out if it is a disese or not this is what I have found that it is a disease:

Obesity is now recognized as a major medical and health problem all over the world Obesity is set to become the biggest disease of the century and health Obesity cases increasing.

Experts attending the 11th European Congress on Obesity said more than 300 million people around the world are obese. Obesity is increasing globally in developed and developing countries and at an alarming rate in children.

"People are getting heavier and heavier, younger and younger and that increases the prevalence of obesity over time," said Seidell.

If measures are not taken to ease the problem, experts predict the numbers could double in the next 20 years.

The biggest rise in childhood obesity has been in the United States but European countries are following the trend. About one in seven children in France and one in five in Italy is overweight.

Research has shown obesity in children is more common in large cities where youngsters exercise less because of a lack of safe places to play, and among families with low education levels. It is also more prevalent in small families and if the mother works outside the home.

Although genetics plays a part, poor diets, lack of exercise and too much time in front of the television and computer are the main factors contributing to the growing number of obese children.

I agree with both Ally and Chelle. You do control what you decide to put in your mouth, but I still think technically obesity is a disease. There is no argument that Type II diabetes is a disease - yet that is also prevented by controlling what you eat. Just some food for thought!

Hear hear Ally. Yes there are some people for whom obesity is a medically proven condition, but in all honesty, I think that society as a whole has come up with "obesity is a disease" as an excuse for poor lifestyle choices. Yes, children are more restricted than they were 30 years ago (when I was a kid), but it is up to parents to make sure that they are leading a healthy lifestyle, and not spending their time electronically entertained, and snacking on junk. :x

With that I think that I better head off to the cranky corner, before I blow a gasket. :x

Judy :D

Thanks Judy, I am glad that someone agrees with me!! Between me, you and Dee, we will have that cranky corner covered mate!!

I still fail to see how it is classed as a disease....I feel that it takes the burden off of people to say Oh I have a disease..they are not being accountable for their actions at all..

yes Simmy it is true that some diabetes is caused through bad diet. I have been told that if I can lose weight now I will decrease my risk of being a diabetic.....I understand your point about the diabetes for sure, but still fail to see how obesity can classed as a disease.

ide call it an epidemic but not a disease, theres nothing making people fat, its not something u just contract. everyone has the ability to lose weight but alot of people just dont want to make the effort. but i also agree some people have medical conditions that can cause obesity

squeezes fat bum into the cranky corner

Obesity is NOT a disease - it is a lack of self control - which I am suffering from and curing with exercise and good food choices.

Sure, there are medical conditions that can make you blow up like a balloon and not be able to lose the weight - but that would account for about .0001% of the worlds obese population
Every day I am getting thinner and thinner.....

I agree with you too Ally.........why are we no longer responsable for our own actions and always have to blame something else. :?

Because to put a label on something mate means we don't have to take responsibility for our own actions, thus making it alright to continue doing what we want and never being accountable for our own mistakes......
