There's more than one corner here? Crikey, who would have thought.

If obesity is to be classed as a disease then it is a self induced one and not biological except perhaps for a tiny percentage as there are always exceptions. Classifying it as a disease certainly makes it easier to hold it at arms length and say I can't do anything about it.

Now we have a cranky corner and a silly corner....how about the thinking corner. This is something I have been thinking on for awhile. They have health warnings on cigarettes, why? Simply put it is bad for you and can kill you or contribute to a disease that can kill you. Cardiovascular disease (including heart, strokes and blood vessel disease) was the leading cause of death in Aus in 2000. The risk factors are tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, high blood pressure, being overweight. Perhaps it is time we started having health warnings on our food! People can eat what the heck they like but maybe letting them know that 'consuming this food may lead to heart disease' might make people think a bit more about the rubbish they shove in their mouths. Yes I know it seems far fetched, yes I know it will never happen but when there are more people out there who are overweight or obese than those who smoke it makes you wonder why they are only targeting that group of people. I sometimes wonder how the makers of some of this unhealthy food can be proud of their product and yet no one seems to notice/care/realise how damn harmful it is. Yes I eat rubbish food, who doesn't, but it is more of an occasional thing than my staple diet and I do so fully aware of just how 'good' it is for me. When these companies try to fob off to us the nutritional value I just want to throw up.

Oh that was the cranky corner wasn't it...

hahha welcome aboard Kim!! You just come on in to the Cranky Corner!! Yes we can have a Thinking Corner!! I scored the Silly Corner (won it iat Bingo!) :P

I totally agree with you Kim.....and again that it will never happen as people might feel a bit uncomfortable with going through the checkout with a trolley full of shite that has all these warnings on them....you may cause them undue stress and harm their fragile mental state, henceforth adding to their disease ridden bodies and thus also being able to claim discrimination and deprevation of liberty!!!

Arrghhhhhhhhhhh don't get me started....but you are right and I know it would never happen. The nutritional information is as far as it will go and perhaps they will soon have to put more info such as trans fats although I see some do already. I just think sometimes people truly have no idea of the content of their food and it's effect on their bodies....I know I never used to think too hard on it. Ok I will shutup now.

Obesity is caused by overeating. But why do people overeat?

I used to eat tones of chocolate when I was depressed, it was the only way I could feel better. Other people eat food, especially junk food. So, the obvious solution may be to medicate this people to make them feel better, but the medication causes you to gain weight as well. And living in a world where physical apearence is so important, people that are overweight became more depressed and eat more  .

Laura not all antidepressants make you gain weight - mine makes me hungry all the time BUT it is up to me whether I respond to those "hungry feelings" or not. Generally, I just drink water, it fills me up and doesn't add to my weight.

Oh, and if your happy pills are working right, you are far more motivated about things and able to deal with those "challenging moments" when they arise :D
Every day I am getting thinner and thinner.....
