hey kate i know the mods (including myself) have been actively deleting what is appearing on the forum. im sure when each of us logs on to the forum that there has been a lot of spam already deleted before we start deleting the ones which are present when we log on. i dont know much about how the forum runs in regards to accepting members and spammers etc but im sure admin are doing things to help. it just sucks when these spammers get through :(

There's an automatic registration process which makes it easy for the bots. On another forum I used to participate in which uses the same software, registration wasn't automatic - you had to send an email as well as register and the account was manually activated. This would put an extra demand on the admin, but it's the only way I can think of to stop the bots and the heaps of porn spamming that goes on.

I run a forum that runs on the same format as this one and has a similar amount of members. The bots keep getting smarter and circumvent the security measures taken on registration every time they are made more complex. This is a phpBB forum, same as mine, and sadly the people who design the forum software arent keeping up with the security issues, other forum types have alot less bot problems.
I'm looking at changing my forum type at the moment, coz the bots are driving me and my moderators mad.

We (the mods) are attempting to remove them. If one seems to slip through and we have missed it, let us know. Perhaps we should invest in those type in these letters things for our sign up???

15kg gained again (as at October 2010).

Thats the last thing you want to come onto your screen at work... Now theres another one thats come online today, and is posting in nearly every bloody topic! Something will have to get done asap otherwise they will take over...And the last thing we want is to not have the forum up and running, another forum I sometimes go to had to shut down for a while to try and fix the problem.

even so, when you have to open up practically every thread to get rid of them, sometimes they can be missed if someone's posted after them, so just letting you know if you find one that looks like it's been missed, just let one of us know.

BTW I think I've got all this morning's ones now.

Butterfly Dawn, this type of forum has an option in Administration to turn those letter things on. It doesnt stop them all, but it does stop some, and doesnt inconvenience real people at all...
