I hate it when people say "I have the flu" and they are up walking around, and all they have is a runny nose and a cough.

I have had the real flu twice in my life and I thought I was going to die both times.

The first time I was bedridden for 1 week, then the infection went to my lungs and developed into pnuemonia.

2nd time pretty much the same except it became bronchitis.

Most people that say they have the flu, really have a cold!

I agree. I don't think I have ever had the flu. They are very differnt things indeed.

I agree Nikki - my mum had the flu once when I was a kid and she was in bed for about 3 days - something my mum NEVER ever did. I sure got sick of scrambled eggs on toast - which was about all my dad could cook. I knew mum must have been seriously ill for dad to be cooking!

My brother also had it once and was bedridden for about a week. So I certainly don't use the term 'flu' lightly.

Actually, once I had a really bad cold and felt so miserable - took time off work and I went to the docs and found out I only had a cold and not the flu! So I can only imagine how awful it must be.

they also have different symptoms (some symptoms are in both, but other's are more common to one than the other, like fever and aches in the flu, colds generally have sniffles etc whereas I think the flu doesn't have to have). You can do a google search for a list of the symptoms of each respective pain in the ass illness, or Mandie would know!

I caught the flu last year while on holidays. Just after I recovered I caught another strain and was in bed for another 2 weeks. I have had a flu shot this year, and had no problems. I will be getting one every year from now on, as being a single Mum I can't afford to be bedridden for a week and think that it is definitely worth getting a shot.

besides the fact that children are the biggest germ factories in the world!!!! A work colleage of mine always has the sniffles or tells us about the latest bug that her dear little daughter brings home from daycare (she's such a cutie though, comes into work regularly to say hello at morning teas)
