Breadmonster, I think it depends on which shakes you do....a lot of them have come a long way, and they now say that they preserve lean muscle mass, (I believe a fair amount of protein does this??) and certain shakes (optifast, optislim, I THINK Kate Morgan, TF etc) have all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function and be healthy, while using your fat stores for energy, not lean muscle mass??? xx

Your body is designed to be resistant to weight loss. It's evolution. once you start restricting your calories, your body will go into lock down mode. It'll still burn calories, but in the forms of, say, your brain, your organs, your muscles. Your organs will stop working as hard so they won't need as much fuel to survive. Your body doesn't need muscle, they use up a lot of energy, so they burn those, and after that's delt with they move onto your fat reserves and once it's done, voila! Skin and bones!

Personally, I'd rather not starve myself. You get bad breath, moodswings, and I don't want my body eating up my brain, it's quite important that it stays sane and functional :)


I was in no way starving myself.

And I know for fact that when I restricted my calories I lost fat, I had my body fat measured and my LBM.

Yes, you might lose muscle on a low calorie diet, but you WILL lose fat.
