Is Stew Healthy?

Postby loveat116 » Mon Mar 31, 2008 6:48 pm

My mum has found the invention of the 'crock pot' and she's been cooking stews non stop. A lot of the time they've got vegetables, meat and a broth/sauce.

Are these kind of things good for you or not? I cant really find anything about it....

I guess that you should find out the ingredients and work each one out seperately to see if its good.

For example, Your mum could be adding fatty meat in which case it would make it high in calories!

Nah she doesnt add oil. I think she just chucks in one of those packets that say 'irish stew' and heaps of vegetbles and stuff :S

I might ask her exactly what she does and see if i can add up the cals,.

I use my slow cooker all the time in winter and don't use anything fattening. Always lean meat, veges, tin tomatoes etc.

yummmmmmmmmm its starting to get to that weather!!

Stew! And Soup! The only good thing about cold weather :D

Only possible bad thing I could see would be if there was really greasy fatty meat in it... but I reckon you would know if that was the case because you would see the greasy spots floating on the surface, wouldn't you :? My mum makes soup with lamb shanks (don't know what those are, don't want to know!!) but those are really oily.... yuck!
