Has anyone heard of the pill Yasmin?

Postby Groovychic » Tue May 02, 2006 9:14 am

I've been doing some research on the contraceptive pill. I don't need it for contraception so I want to get something that is basically going to stop my bleeding, along with not having a weight gain. It seems that there is an average weight gain with both the oral pill and depo-provera, but came across this other pill called Yasmin. It seems that a lot of women have had a round a 5 to 10% weight loss from this pill. Not that I want it to help with my weight loss or anything like that, but I don't want the pill to be adding weight on....it's too damn hard to lose it as it is!!! I had a quick look at pharmacy direct and it is nearly 3 times as expensive as other types of pill. I used to be on Nordette 28 when I was on the pill before. Didn't have breakthrough bleeding and as for the weight gain, I'm really not sure. I went from being about 52kgs at the age of 16 when I started to take it, to being about 64kgs at the age of 22 when I went off it to fall pregnant. But I'm certainly not saying that it was the pill that did that. I think just getting my licence at 17 added to a few kilos!!! I never walked anywhere then! I was seriously considering the injection but I'm so unsure. So thought I would see if anybody out there had heard of that pill and if so had they used it and what side effects did they have. I know everyone has different side effects but it would be worthwhile knowledge to posess when I go to the docs on Thursday. :D

Hi Groovychick,

I was taking Yasmin for about 18 months. I tried it after being on Trifeme and Monofeme - with both of those I put on weight, had break-through bleeding and terrible mood swings.

The only difference I found with Yasmin, apart from the cost, is that I didn't put on more weight.

Probably doesn't help you much but that's my experience with Yasmin. :D

Thats interesting then Hayley, that you didn't put on weight whilst you were on Yasmin. I'm going to discuss all pill types, along with the injection and push a bit for a hystorectomy as well. I don't need my uterus anymore so they may as well whip it out I reckon. After having my tubes tied 5 years ago I really thought I wouldn't need to ever go back on the pill. But if I have to well so be it. But I want to get one that is going to stop my periods! I've had enuf of the heavy periods and bleeding most weeks!

Hi!
I'm not sure how much help I'll be, but I'm on Yasmin at the moment. I spent about a year on a different one, I can't remember what it was called, just a generic one, and along with a bad change in liftstyle not long after I put on a lot of weight and found it hard to lose it. I changed a couple of months ago to Yasmin and have since found losing weight (when I've decided to ie eating right and exercise!) much easier.
And I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere you being worried about going on the pill causing you to lose you libido (sorry if I'm wrong), it certainly hasn't made any difference to mine!!!
Sorry I couldn't be of more use!

Thanks Lizzie, that makes me feel much better. That was that they said about Yasmin, that most women wouldn't gain weight. It is more expensive but if it controls the bad things about most other pills then maybe it is worth a shot. Do you still have a period? Or do you skip the sugar pills, if there are any. Not sure how that one works. I know the one my younger sister is on has no sugar pills so she only gets her period if she forgets to take her pill! It just seems really weird to be thinking about going on the pill at nearly 34 and after having my tubes tied 5 years ago. But I will see what the doc suggests tomorrow. Will let you all know how I go.

There are sugar pills, and I skip them occasionally, but have them most of the time. I don't think my periods have been as painful or as heavy on Yasmin either. But that just might be my imagination!!
I really hope it all goes well for you tommorrow with the doctors and you can find a solution that you're happy with!

I went to the docs today and she was on fast forward I think!!! She has given me a slip to get an ultra sound to look for fibroids, which I will do in about 2 weeks time, and she gave me a script for Yasmin. I asked if I could have that one and she said yes but it's a lot more expensive. Only because it's not on the government list! But that's ok. If it does everything they say it will then I don't mind spending that sort of money on it. She also said a hysterectomy is not out of the question. She said my uterus is just making a thick lining because it wants another baby!!! I said hhhhmmm well my daughter was the last one you delivered nearly 9 years ago and you don't deliver anymore so it's your fault that I'm not going to have anymore.....hahaha. But there is no way I would have another child just to get my uterus into not making such a thick lining!!!! I think taking the pill would be much cheaper! Anyway she told me not to start taking them until I have another period and start in the sugar pills but I ignored her!!! I know that's bad but I did ask the chemist and he said no go ahead. He did say that it will just not be as long until your period and your period will be just as heavy as you have already started building up a liner. Plus I guess it is a precaution because you could possibly be pregnant but there is no chance that I would be pregnant as I have had my tubes done!!! It is stupid that I have had this done yet I still have to go on the pill!!! I also talked to him about whether there was another drug that may be suitable and he said probably only HRT......I said uuuummm no I don't think so! So we'll see how we go with the ultra sound in a couple of weeks.

Great to hear the doctor was helpful this time. I must admit I always go to a chick doctor when I've got a female problem - find them much more understanding and for me, not as embarrassing to talk about.

Good luck for your ultrasound and I hope the Yasmin pill works out for you. I'll cross my fingers for you.

Good luck with the ultrasound Rochelle, hope all goes well.

I know what it's like as I get them regularly. I had a large cyst (20cm) removed last October along with everything it was attached to so now every time I go for check ups they do an internal ultrasound. Got over my fear of male docs thats for sure!

Hi
I went on Yasmin about a week ago, for the reasons you are on it, I had an implant taken out first, which I figure I have put on approx 15kg in the 3 years....
The doc said to ring around, I did, to find the price anywhere between $51-$70, it certainly pay to shop around for this, the pharmacist can charge basically what they want cause its not on the pbs.
BTW, good luck with the stopping of bleeding it took me approx 2-3 days to stop, and I havent had any this week at all :P

Hi Jodess......glad to think I'm not alone with all this!! I paid $72.95 for my script! But I was in a hurry and just wanted to start them. mind you the doc said don't start til the next period but I asked the pharmacist and he said it would be fine. I started taking them last thursday......as soon as I picked up the script! And stopped bleeding the next day, tho I very much doubt that was from taking the pill...more likely I was going to stop then anyway. Have had a terrible attack of my ovarian cyst last night but not sure if that has anything to do with taking the pill. Feel horrid today and like I am going to vomit. So I haven't been game to take the pill yet, or even eat anything yet. Hope all goes well with you on this one.
