ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Postby sassi » Mon Jul 14, 2008 3:53 pm

to lose weight & become healthier people we've all had to make changes (whether they're big or small) to our lifestyles...i know that i've found some changes far easier than others.

off the top of my head i'd say

easy(ish):
 always having low fat milk
 only eating grainy types of bread
 switching from regular soft drink to diet
 swapping fruit juice for fruit (i seem to have gone off the taste of fruit juice anyway)
 introducing tuna into my eating - i used to detest tinned tuna, but now i actually really enjoy it!

hard (found tough or haven't quite managed yet  ):
 reducing my portion sizes - i think this is my most crucial issue. i don't eat lots of the 'wrong' thing, i just eat way too much.
 eating enough fibre - i usually get to about 16-18g a day, but i need to push it over 20g
 consistency with my exercise - i'll exercise for a few days but i struggle once i have a 'rest' day to get back on track the following day, usually leading to 4 or 5 days without real exercise
 alcohol & it's partner in crime - junk food! - i hardly ever drink during the week, and i don't drink often at all outside of the footy season...but during the afl season my bf & i go to every game our team plays in melb. unless it's a sunday afternoon, we drink. if i wasn't so overweight, i wouldn't have a major problem with this but it almost feels like i am losing & gaining the same couple of kilos because i drink too much...which is usually then followed by take away late that night or the next day!

what has been easy/hard for you?

- not eating junk food (although cutting it out initially was a little difficult, but that was 10+ years ago now)
- going vegetarian!!
- going low carb (didn't crave anything, it was very very easy!)
- excercising

Hard
- stopping myself from picking after dinner
- binging and overeating in general
- dealing with sudden and significant weight gains

Easy -

- Deciding to do something about my weight
- Making my own meals, which are different from everybody elses.
- Switching to diet drinks and light dairy products
- Eating salads

Hard -

- Finding the motivation each and every day to make healthy choices
- Figuring out a healthy eating plan that wont affect my IBS - most diets suggest high fibre foods, plenty of fresh fruits and veges etc, which I just can't eat
- Exercise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Easy:
;-) Going vegetarian (7 yrs now)
;-) Small portion sizes
;-) keeping sweets and chocs to a minimum (this has been easy coz i dont have much of a sweet tooth, i'm more of a savoury person)
;-) Significantly reducing my alcohol intake (i used to drink a lot in varsity. now i only drink socially on weekends when i go out- and i dont go out every weekend)
;-) drinking water ( i used to struggle with this. as a child, i hated water, but i find it easy now coz i put a few splashes of lemon juice in my water and that makes it taste more appealing to me)

Hard:
;-( Exercising (i hate it!!!! i have to force myslef to do it, hence my weightloss has been slow. i suppose i need to find exercises that i really enjoy so that i dont feel like i'm exercising)
;-( Giving up cigarettes
;-( pizza!!!!!!! (its my weakness coz i love cheese)
;-( carbs in general (i suppose being a vegetarian, i over indluge in carbs)

Easy
* Drinking water
* Not eating takeaway (the nearest maca's etc is over an hour away and noone will deliver pizzas here lol)
* Eating raw veg/salad
* No alcohol, unless it's a special occasion eg, wedding.

Hard
* Stopping Comfort Eating
* Eating more fruit
* Lowering my dairy intake (yoghurt and cheese especially)
* Exercising more (not just walking around the farm doing farm chores)
* eating regularly (i have always had trouble eating main meals, i'm more of a snack when i feel like it)

You know, it was easier to come up with a list of hards, not wanting to dwell on the negatives too much i decided to list my top 5 hardest things to do.

i totally understand! that was one of the things i was thinking when i created the thread...it's been playing on my mind for a while now. the changes i've found easy are things i pretty much always did before anyhow. for example. like not drinking full fat/sugar soft drink - i hardly ever did before & now i just never do.

eek. i don't think i'm making sense! it's been a long day

This is a great thread to have begun , thank you Sassi!

Okay:

Easy: :D
- low fat dairy products
- drinking water
- not drinking soft drinks
- eating fruit
- drinking herbal tea
- Taking vitimins
- not buying packets of biscuits (easier to not buy them than buying them and not eating the entire packet!)

Difficult
- small portions
- excersize consistancy
- fatness / thinness obsession
- eating enough vegies
- low carb more protein
- sticking to an excersize i like without stressing over fattness
- giving up the "oh bugger it, you only live once" mentality
- liking myself now no matter what

Blimey, the list goes on! And yeah, alot of my easy list i've been doing for like, ever anyway.. I wish i could find some of Hurricane Katrina's Easy list, Easy!

lol time really does make a difference!!!
 keeping a food dairy & being consistent has become second nature - it just takes time & if i do eat bad keep continuing
 i've realised its not about cutting out completely - leads to binging. with chocolate i've found 85% dark chocolate to be the best - only need a little bit to cure the craving
 carbs aren't bad, i was just eating 2 much of the wrong crabs -white & refined which spiked my blood sugar leds to wanting more sugar
 i'm fighting it, still have bad body image but i'm not being so mean to myself anymore, i am believing that i can do it
i've turned all the hards into easy/positives :)

Easy:
- Drinking lots of water and green tea.
- Thats about it heheh!

Hard:
- Not eating carbs or as many carbs for dinner!
- To start exercising, once I'm all sweaty I'm fine to keep going.
- Eating some sort of chocolate once a week.
- Cutting out completely on hot chips and asian/thai dishes..
- Push-ups and chin-ups my god!!
- To exercise in the mornings before work.
- The hardest times have been just before 'that' time of the month, just those couple of days before is major craving time for me.
Current weight: 64.2kgs
Goal weight: 60kgs

Ok so my Sydney trip is over and I've reached 64.2kgs - my next weigh in is in 2 weeks time so that whatever damage I did in Sydney will be done and dusted! I would love to lose 4.2kgs by Xmas time and I guess thats where my new goal begins :)

Easy
Exercise - its been 2 years and am still addicted, though I do group exercise so its probably the friends more than anything.
Salads
Soups
Diet Soft Drink
Low fat dairy

Hard
The time it takes - I feel like writing a book "I've been good for 3 weeks, why aren't I skinny"
The full feeling
After dinner snacking
The organising - getting lunch ready everyday, having the fruit ripe, taking workout clothes to work, remembering socks.
The Plateau's - and the feeling you get that your body is against you.
The bad breath

Wow...interesting thread...my turn...

Easy
8) Switching from Coke to Diet Coke
8) Breakfast and lunch
(I'm on a shake diet...b.fast and lunch already done!)
8) Regular (though sometimes light) excersise
(I do martial arts and play softball)
8) Drinking water
(though admittedly not enough
8) Going low fat
8) Avoiding fast food (Macca's, HJ's, KFC etc)

Hard
 Staying away from all pasta
 Not eating bread or rolls
 Saying no to chocolate :(
 No to pizza
 Not having Subway when my BF does :(
 Coping with moodswings and the desperate need to hit something...HARD
(though the martial arts training classes help with this :))
 Self Esteem on "bad food days"

I could go on...but I don't want to seem like a whinger...lol.
