I used to drink A LOT every day - lived in outback Qld, then western NSW and drinking was a daily routine. I could not keep weight off when I kept drinking - so many empty calories and such a drain on the willpower.
I gave up totally, cold turkey, as did my European husband for whom daily drinking was a way of life. But we could not maintain motivation for preparing meals and exercising when drinking. We both miss it, but luckily rarely at the same time, so we haven't weakened.
If you just want to cut back a lot but need a taste now and then, you could try red or white wine half and half with water (flat or fizzy).
