Treadmill help.

Postby DexterMorgan » Fri Oct 24, 2008 12:11 pm

Hello,
I just bought a brand new treadmill(for the first time in my life) and im wondering what the best way to loose weight with it? Slow speeds for a long time(if so what speeds? Mine goes from 0.5 to 12mph) or faster speeds for shorter time? If you have any ideas on which is the best method to lose weight i would really appreciate it!

I have already lost 100ish pounds and i reccently stopped losing any weight so i bought a treadmill to help i really want to lose another 50-60.

Thanks!

I have a treadmill too. I like to walk outside (live in a small community at the beach) but I like to get on the treadmill too. Have you got an incline setting? I have up to "9" and my highest speed is 16 kph. The best way to burn calories and therefore aid weight loss is to alternate between speed and incline. Today for example, I was on for 30 minutes (did an early morning walk around my area for an hour this morning) and I did 0 incline to start with and when I warmed up at around 4 kph I increased speed every minute and got up to a comfortable 5.2. I stayed there about 10 minutes and then inclined to "6" (first time ever) for 5 minutes. It was a little tough but I kept talking to myself out loud (no one else was home) for the 5 minutes. I then decreased the incline to 3 for several for about 2-3 minutes and then back down to "0". After about another 3 minutes I increased my speed to 6 kph for 5 minutes and then dropped back to 5.2 for a little while. Did 30 minutes. I understand from what I've read that the best workout on a treadmill is the incline/speed variation. Best of luck!!

My Gym instructor told me when I started trying to lose weight to do High intensity for a shorter time rather than low for a loong time. He said we only have a certain amout on some chemical a day so we should make the most of it and go hard. Thats just what he told me, although I think that will change when I start my new program next week :D

Thanks so much for the replies so far.

My treadmill has incline up to 12. It also has programs you can select and one of them is actually weight loss and it changes speed and incline about every 30 seconds for 30 minutes i was just curious if this would work or not.

Use your treadmills for at least 20 minutes a day. Or you can download some workout plan from the internet. Do this workout regularly and your treadmill can help you to reach your goal. Wish you a good luck

Interval training works well, i was following the 'Couch to 5km in 8 weeks' program in one of the Slimming and Health magazine issues- I think maybe August issue. It included short bursts of running in between walking, each week the time spent running increased and so did the total time spent on the treadmil. It was working really well for me.

I put my vote in for interval training. That sounds like a great plan :)

But... work with your body. If you're tired one day, take the intensity down a bit, or break up the workout into shorter segments. And if you've got extra energy, take it a bit harder. Your body will tell you if your workout is too hard or too easy so listen to what it's telling you!

Treadmill sounds very cool as well, I'm jealous
