Is this a weight loss site or a free place for advertising?

Postby mumnbub » Tue Feb 10, 2009 8:55 am

Lately it has become hard to know exactly what this site is for! I come on here for support and encouragment and seem to go into each section to find advertising for products that have nothing to do with weight loss!

Why does this site get so much of it when I dont notice it on other forums! Cant the creators of this place do something to stop it?

But at least the advertising is not as bad as the porn that was on here the other day- it was almost enough to stop me wanting to come on and participate in the forums.

It seems to be getting worse lately. This latest spammer has been the most prolific so far. Unfortunately any attempt to curtail the spammers is going to put some other people off using the forum.

One solution I've seen on another site is to 'audition' new members. Their first post is held in limbo until it's approved by a moderator. While that could eliminate the spam (and porn) there's a chance it might be the smallest of things that puts off a potential new member. If they're already nervous about posting in public about their weight problem they may find an audition process even more daunting.

I think an audition process has sadly become necessary...

I'm deleting SO much spam every time I come on here that I don't have time left to read/reply/post myself!

It's not as bad as it was before they got the new forum software - now 'bot' sign ups are prevented - someone actually has to create an account and then post whereas before it was done randomly with computers. But there has been a lot of spam lately. Each time i log on i have to delete about 12+ posts. The blatant spammers aren't the ones who p*ss me off - it's the people that try to sneak in here under the guise of fellow weightloss journeyman/woman who stick links in their signatures and offer support and encouragement to someone and then stick a link to some 'miracle cure'. I find it condescending and also irritating that someone tries to take advantage of this amazing online support network we've got going.
Just keep moving! And don't be lazy...

i might e-mail scott and ask about giving mods the ability to ban/delete spammers, theres been times ive deleted 10 posts from the same spammer and if we could just ban them it would stop the same people coming back again and again

I'm so naive I often don't realise  until the * little thingies * come up   I think more practise is required in my own time. (although I must admit even I'm seeing a few of late!)

Enough is enough, I spent so long this morning reporting them all.
Maybe they need to give some other people the authority to be rid of them, the more people that can get rid of them the less time others will be subjected to them .

Iv given up reporting them, it takes to long and that gives me less time to actually read REAL blogs and comment, but it also takes a lot of time going into sections that indicate new content only to find its just a spam- some mornings the forum is FULL of it!.
I can ignore most of them but its hard when it looks like a genuine blog so you go into it to find pictures that I reallly really was not expecting! I hope there are not to many young ones that have a chance to see these things.

I have just reported a bunch, but there are too many and I don't have long. It is very sad. Same person all porn type things. Bah.
