Not enough calories...

Postby bigboomba » Sat May 29, 2010 7:53 pm

Hiya,

Just wondering if it's okay to be eating less than the required amount of calories?
I am using Calorie King, and it has come up with a figure of around 1800 calories a day that I need to be eating.
I am struggling to be eating 1000 a day.
The food I am eating is not junk (except today  ).

Am I still going to be losing weight, or should I just be finding foods with a higher calorie count?

You need to eat all of your calories! 1000 is wayyyyy too few.
To be overweight in the first place you must have been eating alot more than 1000 a day so you just have to learn how to eat 1800 healthy calories a day. As you lose more weight your calories will drop and with only a few kilos left to lose they will probably get as low as 1200.
If you are eating 1000 calories a day now how are you meant to drop any lower if you hit a plateau?
You should do CK uni too, it will teach you all of this stuff and hopefully prevent you from doing more harm than good!

Hi

It might seem strange but you wont lose weight (ie. fat) if you dont eat all the calories you are meant to eat. You need to keep your metabolism running at an optimum level to lose weight, which means keeping your food intake to a decent level.
Eating 1000 calories wont result in you losing anything...but your mind!

The problem is, I don't eat alot. I was eating the wrong foods, not alot of food.

I am trying to cut out all junk, so an example of my meal plan for the day, is

2x pieces plain toast, preferably multigrain
1xbanana
1x salad and ham warp, with rice mountain bread
MAYBE a small serving of yogurt
1xpacket steam fresh vegies, 200gms and 250grams baked fish, or chicken breast, or lean meat

I am on duromine (please no criticism) and it has cut my junk cravings 100%. So now I am eating frequent healthy meals, but still not alot of food at a time.

Any suggestions on what I can do to get the cals up? Are there any foods that are higher in calories, but are good for you in some other way?

I wouldnt criticise you for taking Duramine. I took Reductil on and off for two years. I stopped early this year when it was linked to heart problems overseas. I dont really know anything about Duramine so am not in a position to judge (nor would i!! :) )

A couple of ways you could add some healthy cals -
vegetable soup
small baked potato
some nuts (handful of almonds, etc) or avocado (you dont seem to have any healthy fats in your diet -- these are important for your cholestrol levels)
an egg
more dairy (low fat milk, yoghurt, cheese, fruche) -- it looks like you arent getting a lot of calcium and you REALLY need this for your bone health

Just a few ideas...hope they help :)

Thanks N2L, TBH, I hadn't even thought of avocado or nuts. I can't drink milk, it gives me gut aches, so maybe an extra tub of yogurt.
I cut out potatoes because they just take so much effort to cook for me. I can only cook mashed potatoes believe it or not. It would be the easiest food in the world to cook with, and I am useless at it  Will give it another crack tomorrow.

Excellent ideas, very helpful thankyou!! :D

You can't cook a baked potato in the microwave? lol they are soooo good with salsa and light sour cream!
Like everyone else said just up your cals but not the food intake if you can't eat any more, maybe go for a higher cal yoghurt'? a light spread of peanut paste on your toast?
My journey so far...

I'd also suggest having more fruit. You should be having 2 a day, so maybe through in an orange or something?

You dont want to live a life of deprivation, since it wont last and will suck! You just need to tweak it. For example, you could throw in a few crackers with some light cheddar cheese as a snack if you're a cheese person :)
