Short Term Thinking and Long Term Goaling

Recent posts on JP's threads made me start to think about what is happening inside our heads when we are trying to lose weight.
My thinking runs along the lines that we sacrifice our long term goals for short term gain (literal! :shock: ).

It is hardly surprising really that this occurs.
Our whole society is based on the idea of instant gratification.
We want every now and can't wait till tomorrow.
That is why we book everything up on the card often running into debt.
It is why the shops have increased their opening hours.
It won't be long until they are open 24/7 each and every day (including Christmas)
trying to keep up with online shopping.

In my parents' day you saved up to buy something.
Layby was unheard of. Now it is commonplace.
As for high purchase - that was the domain of the loan sharks.

But with all this ready access are we better off?
I remember as a boy that the toy I valued the most was my chemistry set.
I did many odd jobs and saved for ages to be able to buy it.
I still remember vividly the day that I purchased it.
I think that it was the anticipation and the appreciation of the cost that made me value it all the more.

What's this got to do with weight loss?
Well, I believe that we take this general thinking into our weight loss/weight gaining lives.
Our focus is so much into instant gratification that we can't think in terms of having and striving for long term success.
The cake on the plate becomes more important than the weight off at the end of the week.
So we scarf it down and suffer the consequences of this short term thinking.

Success will come when the long term goal is prioritised higher than short term gain.
As it has well been said before;
"A moment on the lips - a lifetime on the hips!" :roll:
We have to change our thinking.
