Ideal Weight

Postby louise677 » Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:20 pm

I just came across a method for working out one's 'ideal body weight' based on your height and wrist measurement to determine your frame size.

If you are less than 5'2", (157cm)
small frame : wrist is less than 5.5" (14cm)
medium: 5.5-5.75" (14-14.6cm)
Large: over 5.75" (14.6cm+)

If you are between 5'2" - 5'5" (157cm-165cm)
small frame : wrist is less than 6" (15cm)
medium: 6-6.25" (15-15.9cm)
Large: over 6.25" (15.9cm+)

If you are more than 5'5", (165cm)
small frame : wrist is less than 6.5" (16.5cm)
medium: 6.5-7.5" (16.5-19cm)
Large: over 7.5" (19cm+)

Once you have worked out your frame size your ideal weight is caculated as thus:
100lbs for first feet of height, then add 5 lbs per inch of height.
If your frame is small deduct 10%, and if large add 10%

For me:
I am 5'6" and my wrist measurement is 5.75", which means I apparently have a 'small' frame
So my calculated ideal weight is 117lbs or 53kilos!

Does anyone else know of any other methods?
I'm curious to know beacuse the BMI is pretty wide gauge. Between my lowest and highest for my BMI there is a 15 kg difference.

I'm 5'5, wrist is 6"

so I am a medium build so my ideal weight is 125 pounds or 56kg.

I have been this weight before in my teens and early twenties but I think I would look too thin now.

How are you measuring your wrist to come out at such large sizes? 5 inches is really big! My wrist is under 2.5 inches. Do you actually mean cms? Are we measuring just below the hand or where the bone is?

I have seen a similar thing but it uses the elbow bones instead.

The BMI does have a wide range, for my height (157cms) it is about 13kgs from end to end. I was trying for the middle ground (around 55kgs) but found it made me look drawn and a bit gaunt so given that the end weight is 62kgs I made my goal to stay under 60kgs. I guess that is a long way of saying you will find where you are happiest.

If you are happy and feel comfortable and fit and like how you look then that is your best guide.

I'm 5'3" and have the tiniest wrist ever, definitely less than 15cm. So, my ideal weight is 47kg exactly

Hi Kim,
It's the circumference of your wrist not it's width.

LOL OK sorry blonde moment....no really, I am blonde! I thought you just meant across it and was like holey moley you gals have man hands.

6" for me ....that's more like it! LOL 2.5 would be smaller than a baby's wrist.

I will track down the elbow one for you and see if it makes a difference. I came out on that one as medium frame and this one I reckon medium too as I am right on the 157cms.
