what kind of doctor prescribes a patient a drug because they "ask for it" goodness that is so irresponsible.....There has been quite a bit of talk about reductil lately and the side effects it can have....I would boycott it personally and it should really come with a "take at your own risk" warning......

I do have to wonder though if she died because she didn't need the drug....(a bit like if men take viagra and they don't need it it can kill them...) still it serves as a warning, that diet and exercise are the only true ways to lose weight successfully without harming your health......

I think it is really sad that such a young life has been ended for senseless reasons.....

I took reductil for 6 months and had a very caring and responsibly doctor who monitored me very closely, so this makes me very sad and angry. It is a drug that should only be prescribed for people with a BMI which says they are obese or morbidly obese. Very sad.

The 4th link down has a great study on Reductil (known as Sibutramine in the US):

I am taking Reductil at the moment. I have also taken it one in the past and it has worked so wonderfully well for me.

It is only for people who have a BMI over 30 and my Dr. is very diligent about who she prescribes it to. She said people have asked her for it and she has said no, but then she knows they've got it elsewhere.

There was a follow up to the article on Mel and Koshy the next Morning and they had a Doctor speaking about the incident and Reductil. That girl should not have been taking it and if she was willing to take it when she didn't need to who knows what else she was doing to lose weight. (laxatives, other pills etc etc etc...)

I was concerned for a minute, but then I spoke with my Dr. and a Nurse I know and we agreed.

All drugs have side effects, even Paracetemol. If you actually read the list of POSSIBLE side effects on every drug you would be horrified. BUT they have to list every possible thing even if it's a one in a million chance.

The problem for me is that before I started taking it I had been trying to get started for almost a year. As soon as I started it, I felt better about myself and it really helped me get going and I have already lost 4 kilos in 3 weeks.

I personally think it's a shame that some people who could really benefit from Reductil will now not consider it because of ONE bad article which actually doesn't show any real proof that it was Reductil that caused her problem anyway.

Of course though with anything you have to well informed and make an informed decision before deciding on a course of treatment. I researched Reductil thoroughly before agreeing to take it. Because it works in the same way as anti-depressants I found it amazingly effective.

Oh I wanted to add that I have regular blood pressure checks and I'm fine. Plus I have been told of the warning signs for what this girl went through. There are a lot of indications which she obviously ignored.

hey dancer thanks for sharing that with us. i ama sunrise family member :P have a card and everything and really miss watching mel and kochie because channel 7 always plays up for us.

in regards to the drug you are right, there are risks with any sort of drug you put into your system. i think as long as you have consulted with a professional about it and and you are being watched with it then there shouldnt be a problem.

i agree people hear one bad thing about it and turn their backs and close their minds. like most things for example all these weightloss programs and drugs etc, it will work for some people and not for others.

It seems to me that that story isnt so much a warning on the drug itself, but a warning against people who dont need it taking it. People overreact a bit when stories like that get published, largely because the media sensationalise it so much. But if it puts people who dont fit the 30+ BMI category off trying to get the drug, then thats a good thing.

Well said.

I completely agree. It is a great option when used as it was intended.
