Hi Jo the best thing you can do is go to the home page here and use the cal/kj calculator to work out what you would need for weight loss....... :D

I think to maintain I need about no more than 1200. To lose weight I have to reduce this drastically. But I'm quite sure my metabolism has slowed to almost a standstill. Does anyone know whether a slow metabolism can be cured (caused by too much yo-yo dieting).?

Calorie King has a calculator which determines what your daily cal/kilojoule consumption is for you do lose weight.

Also, remember the more you weigh the higher your energy consumption will be (i.e don't have to starve to lose weight);but as you lose the weight you need to alter intake otherwise you will maintain the weight but never to go below 1200 cals- am I making sense here?

Tracking calorie intake

Postby Jannie » Thu Jul 05, 2007 1:42 am

I have only been counting calories a short time, but I am using FitDay, a free online diet & fitness manager. You can also buy a programme to install on your PC, but I am finding the online version just fine. It's a bit of trouble to enter your portions, but it gets easier the longer you use it, as it saves your recent info.

It also calculates the right calorie intake (and recalculates as your weight changes), as well as keeping track of weight changes and activities. I am finding this really helpful to keep a running total of calorie intake every day. You can find it at http://www.fitday.com./WebFit/Index.html

I find kjs is easier, looking at the backs of packets and boxes it's always kjs. I also have a kj counter book which has EVERYTHING even my beloved starbucks, sushi and subway. I aim for 5000kjs a day, but I know that's quite low so I don't stress if I go a little over.

i'm getting a bit confused about the calorie intake per day - calorieking suggested 1200 calories per day for me after i put my info in. but i was reading in health & slimming mag last night that if you want to lose more than 6kg, then they suggest eating around 1500 calories per day.

now i'm confused about which one might be correct :?

anyone have any ideas? any advice muchly appreciated!

1200 is very very low, its the very least amount you can eat before your body goes into starvation mode and if you stay on that level for too long your body will still go into conserve energy mode. So its only good for a very short time.

I think 1500 is more realistic and certainly better for long term weight loss. Even now when I have so little to lose I would being very uncertain about dropping my caloric intake so low.

1200 per day is usually used when you only have the last odd few kgs to lose......I noticed with you ticker you have around 30kg to lose, so I would not be going on 1200 per day matey, try the 1500 per day for a couple of weeks and see if it shifts the scales in the right direction for you.....

thank you ally! that's what i read - i.e. that if you have quite a lot to lose, then aim for 1500 a day & if you have less than 6kg to lose then it's more like 1200. yay for more calories!!

now i can move on to obsessing as to whether to eat back my exercise calories
