Does a low calorie diet work?

Postby Christina1100 » Tue Aug 07, 2007 9:25 am

Hello everyone.
I am new to this and just started to use a low calorie approach to losing weight (along with exercise).
I just read info on the net that disturbed me and I would like your opinions on wether or not a low calorie diet has worked for you.
Here is what I read:

"The reason you cannot lose weight by starving yourself (using a low calorie diet) is because your metabolism will detect any major drop in calories and it will then ADJUST ITSELF by burning fewer calories each day. If you begin eating 2,500 calories per day then your metabolism will adjust itself so that your body begins burning 2,500 calories per day. "

Thank you!!

Sounds right to me. To lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit, which you can do by eating less, excercising more, or both. If you drop your calories, this will work initially, but then your body will adjust itself to the new calorie level and you will stop losing weight. Then you need to drop the calories even further... which is not good!

What I reckon is good, is drop the calories, but only do it for a few days, then raise them back up for a day, and cycle it like that. That way your body doesn't have a chance to adjust. It takes a lot of control to do though, and especially difficult if you are an emotional eater (like me!!)

Get in as much excercise as you can too

Read the first line of what you wrote then 'The reason you cannot lose weight by STARVING YOURSELF' Are you sure this info was not intended to be about a VLCD? (very low calorie diet?) These diets rely on you eating around 300- 600 cals a day, and very limited carbs so that your body goes into ketosis, and uses its fat for energy because its getting so little food/carbs.... If you are on a LCD (low calorie diet) that is sensible, and exercising, then you wouldnt be starving yourself, and shouldnt come into too many probs....Sarah had some great advice too btw ;) xx

Hello there ladies.
Thank you so very much for you advice/responses.

No, no. I am not doing a low calorie starving yourself diet.
Gosh. Who could have the discipline to live on that.
This is my thinking and what Im using:

It takes 3500 calories to burn one pound of fat. That means if you want to lose 1 pound of fat in 1 week you need to deplete your body of 3500 calories. One method to lose 3500 calories in 7 days is:
Deplete 500 calories a day (7 days X 500 calories each day=3500 calories a week).
To do this, eat 250 fewer calories a day than what you normally eat and exercise off 250 calories a day=500 fewer calories per day.

Im hoping it will work and I think I should do it a couple of weeks to decide if its working for me.

Any thoughts?

If I was eating 300-600 calories a day I wouldnt have the energy to exercise! Isnt eating that little practically starving yourself? Because your not meant to go under 1200 calories when dieting.

Ketosis relies on you only eating minimum calories and carbs, so that rather than your body using the food you eat for energy, it 'eats' your fat instead...as far as feeling knackered thats pretty common on a diet that uses ketosis...at least in the beginning...they say once you get into ketosis no more light headedness, dizziness etc and you are energetic... so these diets work completely differently to conventional lower calorie, low fat/ high fibre diets xx

For your body to go into ketosis you need under 30 grams a day of carbs (Atkins says 20grams but thats just for induction).

I understand how it works, but its hard to come off those sort of diets because its probable you'll gain a lot back.

I tried Atkins, I caved in at day two and bought a pack of starbursts and ate them all. I could not SURVIVE without sugar, nor would I want to lol.

Diets.........

Postby Christina1100 » Wed Aug 08, 2007 10:13 am

Hi all.
Ive lost weight on the Atkins diet a few years ago.
I went into the hospital for three months. Went in weighing 120 and came out weighing 187 thanks to all of the IV steroids. I did the Atkins diet for a couple of months and lost some of the weight.

But I would rather do a calorie counting diet where I can eat whatever I choose and in moderation. More variety. :0)

What diet plans are you all follwoing?

I agree with Kate too!

I would hate to restrict anything! Everything in moderation is fine.

cant remember who posted it, but for 'extreme' ketosis, you need under 30g of carbs, (diets like atkins) for 'mild' ketosis (like tony ferguson or celeb slim) you can have quite a bit more than that and still be in ketosis, though not as extreme and weightloss will generally be slower xx
