I'm on a VLCD program consuming around 800 Cals a day. In the beginning I didn't experience some side effects going into "Ketosis" as I have just found out it is called. After about Day 4, I was more or less adjusted, At this point I introduced regular exercise, being walking my dogs on my days off, and doing some light weights workouts at the gym (I was afraid of muscel atrophy). I've now been on the program for 17days, and experience very little or No problems at all.
