Fresh vegies versus frozen.

Postby Lynda » Fri Jan 13, 2006 7:33 am

Thankyou all for your thoughts on my three week shopping list. Do you have to eat more frozen vegies in order to get the same vitamins you do from fresh. Since you have to boil frozen vegies a long time, i feel i'm not getting the same nourishment. Would this be true or is it just that my brain is telling me its not fresh therefore not the same?

frozen veggies are getting quite good at retaining their nutritional value, so there should be little difference between them and fresh. I tend to steam all my vegies (fresh and frozen), although I'm not really sure about how they compare in the time taken to cook.

Most of the frozen veggies have more nutrition than what the stores call fresh.
When they freeze veggies its just been picked within a couple of days and snap frozen with all the nutients in there. But what they call fresh in the supermarket is quite often 3 weeks old.
They have tricks to preserve the fruit, they wheel them in and out of cold storage, dip apples in chlorine to stop bacteria mold rotting the old apples and they spray everything with water each morning and night to make them appear fresh.

It certainly does.
My neighbour has dug up a huge 50% of his back yard and dug out the sandy soil and got a couple of trailer loads of rich compost soil. He's edged the garden with sandstone retainer bricks and has planted lettuce, beetroot, capsicum, tomatoes, seedless grapes, strawberries, and two fruit trees (I can't remember what they were).
I hope he remembers to spray the plants with a natural herbal bug spray so everything doesn't get wormy

wow, and they'd all grow fantastically in Perth (Most of those plants need to be hot-housed here). When I grow up and get a property I'm gonna have a vegie patch!!!

I would be lost without our veggie patch, it all tastes so much nicer than what you get from the shops.
