Not eating enough calories?

Postby Shay » Fri Feb 01, 2008 1:57 am

Hi again

I've been eating healthy, but i've been caculating my calories and i can barely hit 800. For my body weight, it says i need to be eating at least 1200 to lose weight.

Is it wrong for me to continue eating so little calories or should I force myself to eat more? Which will help me lose more weight?

Are you sure you are calculating your calories correctly? Because 800 calories is very very very low and would leave you feeling incredibly hungry. If you need to force yourself to eat more than 800 calories then either your eating less than you think (do you weigh food?) or you have a medical problem.

No worries :D

This is what I had yesterday:

Breakfast: Special K with low fat milk

Lunch: White rice with okra in a tomato base

Dinner: Grilled eggplant and zucchini, 2 tablespoons natural yogurt, salad, 20 gm smoked salmon, OJ

Oh, and I had a cup of tea :D

I find it very hard to believe you would be satisfied on that amount.

How much are you eating though? If you're eating a huge bowl of rice with okra then that will supply you more calories than a single serving of 1/2 a cup of rice. It would definitely satisfy you and keep you fuller longer, but unless you're taking portion size into account it's hard to get an accurate feel to how many calories you're consuming per day.

Do you measure your amounts? That could be useful if you have issues with portion control (like I do!) Or can you guess at the amounts so we have a better idea of your calories?

Portions are pretty small to average. With the rice its a small bowl. I dont really have a problem with portion control. What I do is eat all my vegies first, so I end up eating less meat and carbs.

To be honest I think you should eat more. Not just because of the calorie issues. Depending on your serving sizes of veggies and salad, and what types of veggies and salad you are eating, you are probably not getting enough calcium, protein and many other nutrients. Calorie King can help you track these things if you play around with the settings. Many people who consume too few calories (such as people with anorexia) end up with osteoporosis later in life. You don't want that to happen to you!

Yeah I dont! Maybe I'll force myself to snack throughout the day on stuff like low fat yogurt with muelsi, and fruit etc. Now that I've written it and can analyse it, I should probably add more protein aye.

they sound like good snacks. nuts would probably also be a good one - they'll bump up your calories a bit & are also a good source of protein (& prob other things that i don't know about  )

I find that I eat smaller meals than I used to. I can feel like my stomach is about to eat itself and as soon as the food hits my mouth I feel instantly satisfied having hardly eaten. Maybe the small snacks are the way to go? every few hours have a small snack and you'll find it's pretty easy to get your calories up a bit because you don't want to deprive your body of any essential nutrients that are going to come back to haunt you down the track

That looks kind of like the amount of food I eat:

30g special K + 1/2 cup low fat milk + 1/2 small banana, occasionally a coffee with low fat milk and sweetner
bowl of peas (i don't weigh them!) + 65g salmon in spring water
2-3 seafood sticks in seaweed, maybe also an egg + more greens (which i don't weight)
usually a no fat yoghurt for dessert, but that makes me feel QUITE full.

I also drink lots of tea, and sometimes I have miso soup in the afternoon.
