Confused about Net Calories

Hi all,

I'm using Calorie King to help me maintain a healthy diet.

For my age, height, weight, etc it says I should have a net consumption of 1320 calories a day. Every day I do a circuit at the gym which burns approx 300 calories. Does this mean I should in fact consume 1620 calories a day??

I eat mostly fruit and veg (with cereal breakfast and a roll for lunch) and most days are under 1320 calories without considering what I'm burning at the gym....so i guess a net of around 1000...??

Should I be eating more or am I calculating all wrong....I've been stuck on 72.5kg for 3 weeks now...AUGH....confused!!! :lol:

I get confused about this as well so I'm looking forward to reading the answer! I've always assumed it's the net calories you have to worry about otherwise if you are doing a lot of intense exercise you wouldn't have enough energy.

OK I'll have a bash ali... I am guessing that 1320 calories a day is to maintain your weight? yes?

If so then anything under this whether it be reduction of this daily amount or calories you expend through exercise will in theory reduce your weight.

So lets say you eat exactly 1320 a day... your weight should reduce by 300 calories every time you go to the gym... thats 2100 calories a week (7 times) or 6300 calories in three weeks (21 times)

If you havent been that many times reduce it. Then you have to realise that these calories would have you losing 1.8 ponds or about .75 of a kilo.

Now the reasons you might not have lost this are you might have miscounted on your intake OR you might have added muscle at the gym OR a number of other 'girlie' probs.

Thats the story in theory anyway.. hope this helps.. :)

just to clarify here... I'm unsure what your maintenance calories were to start here... was it 1620 calories or 1320 calories? Which ever it is thats what you should eat to maintain your weight...

its the 300 calories per session at the gym you will be losing in this scenario...

tell me what it is AND tell me roughly how much you want to lose a month... you're 72.5 Kgs now... tell me wjat you want to get down to and i'll try to give you a couple of options... if you want of course.. :)

JP1, you're a legend!!! I think it even makes sense now!! :P

I weighed myself this morning and......down to 72! YAH!

My goal is 65 by June (going over seas!) but my initial goal is to be under 70.

On Calorie King, I think my is 1320...

hi ali... congrats on losing the 0.5 Kg :)

ok if you want to lose 7 kilos before June... lets say just under five months (or 5 lots of 4 weeks = 20 weeks) then thats 1.4 Kgs every 4 weeks... which is very 'doable'

Now whatever that maintenance calorie figure was you calculated and please check with maybe another online calculator as its important and I think it must be 1650 cos unless your a small girl 1320 seems too low to me (but anyway please check this, tell me your height and age if your unsure and I'll tell you) then thats your base...

Now to lose the 1.4Kg every four weeks and convert that into calories... its 1.4 Kg = 3.1 pounds times 3,500 calories a pound = 10,800 calories you need to expend per 4 weeks... if you are saying you expend 300 every time you go to the gym... thats 36 times you need to go to the gym in 4 weeks (28 days)... so you either have to extend your gym time by about 30% every time or else eat less calories per day...

For example say you go to the gym 5 times a week... thats 20 times all up in the four week cycle and you will expend 6000 calories... you still have to expend another 4800 clories in that cycle to lose the 1.4 Kgs so thats a daily amount of 172 calories less eaten per day or 4800 / 28 days = 171.42 ... get how it works now?

I think I'm going to have to print that out and re-read it slowly!! Haha! :lol: But yes, I think it does make sense :D

I'm 31, 168cm...and not particularly small!! You may be right about the 1650 caloaries - maybe the 1320 was to lose the weight....

1.4kg per 4 weeks is VERY do-able!! I'm completely re-inspired now...when you look at the big picture - for me 7 kilos - it seems like such a long way off and sometimes unobtainable, but broken down like that makes it look easy...well....easier!! :P

OK I used this chart

put in your details and little no exercise (desk job) just to get your basic daily allowance... its 1761 but lets cut the difference with what you said before and say 1,700... remember thats with NO exercise or anything and just to maintain at 72 Kilos

Now as per above you still need to lose 10,800 every 4 weeks to lose the 1.4Kg... so no matter whether you eat less per day OR go to the gym... you have to make up those 10,800 calories in expenditure over 4 weeks? Yep?? :mrgreen: easy.. and yeah I think the 1320 was including exercise so you have more to play with... more to eat :wink:

Just a few tips... eat your brekkie.. try to cut down your fat intake... girls only have a daily allowance of 40g a day... I feel this is very important cos your actually stripping the fat from your diet and hence your body fat is going down which to me is what its all about. Again I dont think my method is 100% right but I dont think any way is 100%... many paths lead to paradise 8)
