ooohhh flaxseeds are sooo good for you:
here I found this:
Tips for Preparing Flaxseeds:

Grind flaxseeds in a coffee or seed grinder in order to enhance their digestibility and therefore their nutritional value. If adding ground flaxseeds to a cooked cereal or grain dish, do so at the end of cooking since the soluble fiber in the flaxseeds can thicken liquids if left too long.

A Few Quick Serving Ideas:

Sprinkle ground flaxseeds onto your hot or cold cereal.

Add flaxseeds to your homemade muffin, cookie or bread recipe.

To pump up the nutritional volume of your breakfast shake, add ground flaxseeds.

To give cooked vegetables a nuttier flavor, sprinkle some ground flaxseeds on top of them.

Add a tablespoon of flaxseed oil to smoothies.

Yep, grind em up is best, or you can just sprinkle them in things (like breads, savoury muffins etc)

LSA (linseed, sunflower seeds and Almonds) is a ground up 'stuff' that you can get that is really nice on cereal. inseed by itself would be too.

I was just worried because the main thing I was planning was to sprinkle them on cereal the way they are...but then I read that they just pass through and nutrients aren't absorbed if they aren't broken up...guess i need to get a coffee grinder or something then...?

You do need to crush them to get the goodness out - so either chew very carefully or grind them. You can do it with a mortar and pestle if you're only doing relatively small amounts. If you're doing say 3-4kg lots, I'd get a big grinder.

Linseeds (Flaxseeds) are very high in omega 3, which s very good for you. Just a quick search gave me http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whatto ... axinfo.htm

Haha my bf would *kill* me if I used his coffee grinder for flaxseeds!!!

You can get nice coffee grinders from Kmart for ~$30-40, maybe even the cheaper ones would be good. I seriously doubt you have to get a top of the line coffee snob grinder, it wouldn't matter if the grind isn't perfect and even.

Hey Tam

I think it is so cute that you bough flaxseed and didn't know what to do with it. I do things like that too. I bought polenta and when i got home found there were no instructions on the pack. I had no idea what it was used for so looked it up on the net. You would think they would make sure to give instructions on the pack to encourage you to use it more often! I must say flaxseed sounds like lindseed like maybe you feed it to your horse to have a nice healthy coat. hehe
