There doesn't seem to be much you can do to stop it. It's just your circulatory system overreacting while you're exercising. Water retention can sometimes make it worse, so make sure you regularly drink enough water. And make sure your water/electrolyte balance is good. Sports drinks can help with this. Here are a couple of sites that talk about the issue:

I have the same problem and i find it helps to make sure I keep my arms bent and my hands above elbow level...

Tania you should go see your doctor about the swelling hands, often it's nothing but it can be an early symptom of thyroid problems so its best to get it checked out. Not trying to scare you but its better to be safe than sorry :D

Happens to me too when I go for long walks/hikes and I find the trick is to make sure I've got a water bottle in my hands and switch it from hand to hand. Keeps the hand higher than the elbow and avoids swelling :)
Just keep moving! And don't be lazy...

Thanks for the concern Rose :) ,i have had thyroid checked, nothing wrong there.I have been doing the raising my hands to my head every so often on my walk and that has helped a lot.
