What do you do with outgrown clothes??

Postby ali76 » Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:51 pm

Just wondering what you all do with clothes you outgrow??

All of my summer clothes are now too big....I need some new ones but what do I do with what I have now?? Do I get rid of them or do I keep them 'just in case'??

Hi there,

I have given away clothes that don't fit me, I'm not planning on going back to the size I was so no point having them around!

If you are really serious about losing weight and maintaining your goal weight then definitely give them away!

I have to admit I still have my size 14 and 16 suits. I'm holding onto them because EWK and I plan on having babies in the next few years. Since it's inevitable I'll gain a bit of weight it makes sense to hold on to them. That way I have some 'in between' outfits for when my normal clothes are too tight but maternity clothes are too big.

If you have no intention of gaining weight over the next few years I'd recommend getting rid of your old clothes. That way you have no choice but to maintain your weight.

If you decide to get rid of your old clothes you could sell them on eBay and then invest the money in some new clothes. Or, if you like the clothes you already have, you could go to a place that does clothing alterations and get them taken in. Cheaper than buying new clothes.

Ooohhh....Ali, good point about babies...I didn't really think about that!!

I've worked too hard to put it back on and don't want to fit into them again under normal circumstances but may not have a choice post-baby!! I just don't want to be negative and hold onto them in case I fail!!!

Put them in deep storage then. That way you won't think they're hanging there 'just in case'. They're packed away for the happy day that you are full of baby. If necessary get some of those vacuum storage bags so you can tuck them away somewhere where you won't come across them easily. Just make sure you remember where you put them or you might not be able to find them when you need them in the future!

I'm lucky. My wardrobe is so packed full of crap I can barely find the stuff I do wear let alone the bigger sizes that don't fit me any more.

I blame eBay. Damn eBay.

As soon as i grow out of them i give them to someone who is also losing weight but just getting into that size, in turn i get clothes from someone else how is losing but smaller than me- that way we are not wasting money on buying new clothes that will only fit for a few weeks/months. If you dont have anyone to give them to then take them to lifeline or similar- someone will get some use out of them.

I'm the same. I've just discovered a whole lot of size 16 clothes in my wardrobe and most of them i've never worn. I'm listing them on ebay today. :)

Good idea about the need for slightly bigger clothes for maternity and post baby................BUT don't do what I did and then continue to fill those bigger clothes post baby!!!

I did a massive clear out last week of my wardrobe.........everything from a size 26 to a size 18 is GONE. I gave some to a friend who is losing weight (she is moving into a size 20) and the rest have all gone to the Salvos.

(I was tempted to list them on Ebay, but who I am kidding........I barely have time to brush my teeth at the moment, let alone list on Ebay, LOL!)

So I am looking in my wardrobe knowing that the very few things I do have do actually fit and flatter me. There is not much (ie only 1 pair of jeans, 2 pairs of shorts and about 5 tops and one frock) BUT hell, I do so much laundry every day for the kids, I'll just have to keep up for my own clothes.

I have kept two "corporate wear" suits (size 22) which I am taking to a dressmaker tomorrow to get her advice on having them altered........they were exy at the time, and I like them a lot, so I will see how much it costs.......

And then come April, I am off for a huge shopping spreeeeeeee!

There's a charity organisation called "Fitted for Work" - they give work clothes to ladies that are returning to work after being unemployed and don't have money to buy suits etc. I think they might also give clothes to disadvantaged people trying for job interviews as well, not sure. Anyway they take all sorts, suits, shirts, stockings, handbags etc. Don't have the link but I'm sure you could find something on Google
