Exercise; does 4 x 10 mins have the same effect as 40 mins

Postby BlueRaven » Thu Sep 30, 2010 12:12 am

I guess I should explain this a bit better. When doing exercise, for example riding the exercise bike, is there a difference in the effect on the body (mainly calorie/fat burning I am enquiring about) if I do four stints of 10 minutes compared to riding for 40 minutes in one go?

I think it should but in the 10min you'll have to be going flat out if you want to get anywhere. GOOD LUCK!!

Yes. You are better off doing 2 lots of 20 mins where your heart rate is at above 65% of it's maximum rate. (Basic yet fairly innacurate way to work that out is 220- your age= your maximum heart rate).

Obviously if you don't have time for that, 4 sets of 10mins is better than no exercise at all.

The body really only starts using its stores after 20-30 minutes of hightened heart-rate. 4x10 in my oppinion would be quite a waste of 40 minutes, unless you were going bat-out-of-hell.

it all depends on what kind of timeframe you are talking between sets,

if we are only talking a couple of minutes then it wont have a huge effect on weight loss as your heart rate will still be up, but intensity is the key, i would prefer to do 4x 10 mins of HIIT (30secs at slow pace, 30 secs at medium pace, 1min flat out) then 40 mins of ploddign along on a treadmill
