Loose Skin

Postby brendan » Thu Nov 18, 2010 7:00 pm

I have seen cases where people who have lost weight end up with loose skin hanging from the tummy. Does this always happen, and is there anyway to avoid the problem other than having to go for plastic surgery to correct it? :?
Obviously I'll be better off for the weight loss, but if this problem is avoidable I would feel a bit better about it.

Doesn't always happen - it's a factor of the amount of weight you have to lose and how elastic your skin is (which is a function of age, genetics and skin care). Unfortunately if you do get the excess skin, lots of it like the classic tummy apron, surgery is the only thing that would get rid of it. :(

You can limit it and improve the appearance of small amounts of it by toning the muscles in that area so the entire area is better supported and filled out with muscle.
35kg lost. (November 2005 - October 2006)
15kg gained again (as at October 2010).
Back to the drawing board - Let's do this thing!

I might be lucky, despite my age my skin is pretty elastic - and I'll try for big stomach muscles
Thanks Tegan, it is a bit worrying.

In my surfing of the net I came across one theory that it is not so much the loose skin, but the layer of fat within that skin that causes the sagging skin - so the idea seems to be to concentrate on losing that fat and the skin will take care of itself. I must say that it does sound intuitively correct - I guess I'll know in about 15 months or so :D

Hi there,

I have the same problem with stretch marks. Bleck. They're annoying but like you said I don't go strolling around town nude either lol

Palmer's body creams have several that are supposed to be good for stretch marks. A friend used the Cocoa Butter with Vitamin E cream during pregnancys and she never got marks. Another is Palmer's Cocoa Butter for stretch marks with elastin. I have both but I haven't tried them for a very long time. At the moment I'm trying Nivea Firming body lotion because of my weight loss but I'm not sure if that will have any effect on stretch marks.. All those are available at woolies/coles/kmart etc for about $10 or $15. Some chemists have little sample size bottle of Palmer's too for around $2.

Apparently they fade over time and genetics play a part in who gets them. My counsin is a size 8 and she even has stretch marks on her B cup breasts! >.<

Some fake tans can hide them as well apparently. But if you go to dark they stand out more I've heard! Very annoying! lol

At least you know you aren't alone huh! Good luck :) Please let me know if you find anything works well for them!

Thanks for tips jessmeow!

When I posed the question it was kind of hypothetical, but now I am noticing the stretch marks so it is becoming a real question now, but even so it is not too bad - I think I might be one of the lucky ones. Having said that though, I still have 40+ kg to go, and atleast 80% of that is in the belly
