BMI Goal weight confusion

Postby cailea » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:53 pm

Hi All,

Well after 2 years I am 55+kg down.

As my "goal" weight becomes closer, it is feeling even further away!

I started my journey focused on reaching a normal BMI, for my height the 20-25 normal category equals 62-79kg. I am beginning to think (current weight 88kg) that I am going to need to be lower than 79kg as I definitely have a lot of fat still on my body!

As someone who has not been a normal BMI since I was 7, I have no idea where I need to be and what is the "right" weight for me to have as a goal.

Any advice or personal stories appreciated.

Thanks

Just some info that I've heard... The BMI is used merely as a gauge on what a healthy weight range should be for the general public. However, a trainer at the gym told me that if you work-out to lose weight and thus, have built up some body muscle, the BMI isn't a good indication. In fact, he told me that almost all personal trainers are in the 'overweight' range despite being physically fit and healthy. This probably due to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat..

Hmm, maybe a better indicator would be the percentage of body fat?

I have heard that too .. that you should shift towards body fat percentage over weight/BMI.

I don't have a set of body fat scales but I'd like to get some as I'm getting closer too .. I don't think they're very expensive from somewhere like BigW.

Yup, BMI is a very rough gauge. If you think about it, just about every football player, body builder, wrestler, boxer etc you see would be classed as obese (because they have well developed musculatures that tip the scales)... don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to try and tell them that.

It's also been shown to be inaccurate for various nationalities that have certain body types.

You're best to go with body fat percentage and how you look and feel.
35kg lost. (November 2005 - October 2006)
15kg gained again (as at October 2010).
Back to the drawing board - Let's do this thing!

Just an update....:)

My body fat percentage is over a little, so a good indicator to lose more.

I asked all my friends but it was pointless as they all have been ta normal weight at some point as an adult so used that as a gauge.

I visited my doc today and asked him my ideal weight. He said 75kg,.....so 13 more to go arrrrghhh (I was hoping he would say 79-80 lol)

I have been having a break and on maintenance for a month so time to step up the plan again :)

Thanks for all the assistance

Thanks metal! You have lost a hell of a lot too!! :)

After 2 yrs I am just fed up of it lol and that's what I told the doc.

I can maintain my weight now but the highly restrictive diet phases are killing me, just need to get back in the focused head space. Just worried this last 13kg is going to take a very long time.

Oh and based on you other post...an update...I told a few ppl what the doc said and I got the "Nooooooo, that's way to much! You will look ill"....my mother included ;) not sure how I can look ill when I am still a size 14! Lol

Hope all is going well with your last few kilos :D

As others have noted, the BMI is a useful tool however it is not tailored to the individual... There are just so many variables to take in to consideration.

Anyway, BIG CONGRRATULATIONS on your loss so far. 60kgs is just an amazing achievment, and I hope you can see that (sometimes its a little hard to see the forest through the trees, I know)
HW: 84kgs (2011) got down to 67kgs (2012)
SW: 74kgs - (2013) post baby!
CW: 68kgs (Updated 6 May 2014)
GW: 62-64kgs (size 10)
