I know what you are saying about resistance training.
It should be used as a combination, you shouldnt ever cut out cardio. I know people who are very VERY muscly with low body fat % and do NO cardio at all. They have no endurance and one of them has heart problems as a result.
I am very pro resistance training, i probably do that more than cardio (cause its more fun). But i dont think cardio is a waste of time thats all.
+ i eat A LOT of protein and do resistance training to maintain any muscle i might lose during runs. Maybe people dont know they need to do this?
