Walking Challenge - Anyone interested

Postby Kyles » Sat Mar 18, 2006 3:55 pm

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone was interested in a walking challenge i.e. clocking in kilometres walked each week. I feel that we emphaisis so much on our kilograms that for some people it becomes an obsession so it would be good if we can balance it out by also recording kilometres walked..seeing that is the best weightloss excercise. Then if you have a bad week on the weightloss, least you can feel positive about the kilometres increasing. I guess it doesnt even have to be a challenge, just a thread where we can record our walking log.

Any interest??
Kylie : )

could it also be bicycle km??? Since I got my bike, I do a lot of my exercise that way now. And since it's a difference muscle group I it'll brobably give my muscle building and weight loss a kick in the pants :D
35kg lost. (November 2005 - October 2006)
15kg gained again (as at October 2010).
Back to the drawing board - Let's do this thing!

Hi BD,

Why not...?? I guess it can be anything that can be measured in distance. I would just like to measure something else other than weightloss especially if its going to get people moving more as well..

Those bike computers which you can put on your bike are great as well. They seem to measure everything...

Great idea's girls!
The Bike Challenge and the Walk Challenge would have to be two seperate challenges otherwise you would need a 12 to 1 ratio because of how much easier it would be to ride 1 kilometre compared to walking it.
You can put up your challenges on the challenge thread if you like and see how many take up the challenge.

Perhaps see who the first person to get to 20 kilometres is with the Walking Challenge (be it walking on the street or on the treadmill)
And the first person to get to 50 kilometres on the Bike Challenge.

To the Challenge Thread - http://www.weightloss.com.au/forum/viewforum.php?f=19

I know a way we can include bike rides into the walking challenge!

In the exercise energy charts (link below) cycling at 20kph burns 2.5 times more energy per kilo of body weight than walking at 5kph does. Why don't we just divide the number of cycling kilometres by 2.5 to come up with a walking kilometre equivalent.

I'd like to be able to include both in the one challenge because I combine walks and bike rides throughout the week.

We could even note in our post that a bike ride was converted, e.g. Date: 10km (25km bike ride converted to walking kms)

What do you think?

Thats a good idea Ed. If you write how you did the exercise ie walking or cycling, then it can be worked out. I don't tend to get on a bike very often, but if I did I would like to include those kms as well. I might be able to manage 2.5kms but that would be about all!!!

I just had another thought. I try to swim a few times a week as well. So what about swimming??? We have a 10metre pool but I probably only do about 10 to 15 laps at the moment, so it's only 100 to 150 metres!!! Is there a conversion for that as well. Cos surely in that time I would have used more calories than walking that distance!!!! Well I am hoping anyway!!!
