Shocking! I am actually starting to enjoy the Gym!

Postby sweet-tooth » Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:11 pm

So i joined a gym for the first time in my life two weeks ago! I started off just on the cardio, but have since moved to the weights etc. And surprisingly, i am really really enjoying it! I feel like i'm pushing myself further each time, and accomplishing something i've wanted to do for so long.

Only problem is that I don't seem to be losing much weight. I guess i am building muscle, thought and that's just as important!

The only other thing that bothers me is the other people at the gym. All the weight and cardio equipment is in one big room and i feel a bit intimidated by those 'bulkier' people who must see me working out and looking silly! Although, i'm trying to not let this deter me and just get on with the workout!

I would love to hear from anyone who has any advice and or inspiration!

Generally, everyone at the gym is there for similar reasons, and I'm sure they're far too busy thinking about their own workout or other stuff in their lives to pay you too much attention. Maybe try starting a conversation with someone - if you get to know the people there they'll probably not be so intimidating (of course the odds are that a couple might not be friendly, but that's ok too).

15kg gained again (as at October 2010).
Back to the drawing board - Let's do this thing!

i'm with tegan... they're just there to workout too, I honestly doubt anyone is thinking anything about you or what you look like. The bigger guys are probly paying more attention thinking about the guys that are bigger than them, haha!

I have started lifting weights with a personal trainer and I LOVE it!

Some handy things I have learned from working out with other people around:

Anyone who has time/energy to judge someone else is not working as hard as they can and is therefor beneath your contempt!
Ditto for anyone looking cool and collected - if you are working hard enough it does NOT look pretty no matter what size you are!
Anyone who knows what they are doing is looking at your form and technique not your body!
Anyone who IS working as hard as they can gets respected by the serious folks, even if what they lift is tiny in comparison - your maximum is your maximum and so long as you are trying and improving you will be respected.
I never thought I would witness the destruction of a Universe whilst carrying a naked merchant banker...

I agree what everyone else has said, in my experience no one really gives two hoots what anyone else is doing in the gym, the only time I look at someone else is if I notice a top of shorts or something I like (shopaholic lol). I respect everyone for just being there and I couldnt care less what they look like when they are working hard- I know i look a sight once i get started lol.

I only just joined, i think its been about nearly 2months now, and Im loving it Im a complete junkie. In the first few weeks I gained about 3kg, so i understand what you mean there, but dont worry it does start coming off again I promise. You will most definatly be losing fat and gaining muscle, also when you start lifting weights water holds in the muscle a bit more so you can sort of a false positive if you get what I mean?

Best of luck- next stop gym junkie town. :D
